How can you give a guy a 72 million dollar contract and pay him 34 million the first year. Looks like they would learn something

from the Redskins and Hainsworth deal. That's paying him half the money the first year don't make sense!

Oh wwell hope JR understands I sure don't!!!!

When you're the worst team in the league, you tend to overpay the talent you still have. CJ was willing to goto ATL but the money kept him here. He was the top FA Dlineman that year. ATL ended up with Ray "Can't rush the passer" Edwards to a similar lucrative contract with less performance.

A little comparison:

.

The Arizona Cardinals have signed defensive end Calais Campbell to a five-year contract through 2016, the team's website reported Thursday. According to NFL Network's Jason La Canfora, Campbell will make $55 million, with $36 million due the first three years of the deal.

The 2008 second-round pick out of the University of Miami started 46 of his last 48 games and has 159 tackles, 18 passes defended and 21 sacks in his career, including eight in 2011.

CJ:

7/29/2011: Signed a six-year, $76 million contract. The deal contains $32 million guaranteed, including a $30 million signing bonus. 2012: $4.75 million, 2013: $6.75 million, 2014: $8.75 million, 2015: $9.75 million, 2016: $10.75 million, 2017: Free Agent

CJ's contract isn't frontloaded, it's actually the opposite. His cap hit gets larger and larger year after year.

Personally I'd like to see some of the Panther players making news for being the best production wise like Jared Allen or JPP rather than only making news for being the highest paid.

CJ plays the run better than JPP, and its true Allen is better but he also makes more.

jared allen's deal with minnesota was the biggest contract for a defensive player ever at the time.

i've seen some people throw his deal around as an argument against charles johnson's contract because the total value of allen's was actually a little less than johnson's. the context is pretty different for the two. allen's cap hit is also going to be over $14 million this year. while it's true that CJ's contract is backloaded i can't see him making it to the end of his current deal without a restructure.

    • Your thoughts? I don't think the trade up or even down value system stays exactly in place this year. Look at all the bad trades that hurt teams that give away too much (49ers for Lance, even us w/the Bears set us back). What trade up except Mahomes/KC was it really a great trade for the team giving up a lot? Same with trading down. Teams will know you don't want to pick and they won't be giving the store to move up because there is not a generational talent to do that for. Now, I believe these possibilities.  The Giants probably won't take QB-Sanders at 3, it's too much pressure if it doesn't work. They don't really need another edge rusher with Carter. I can see them possibly saving face, trade down to even the Panthers at 8 but not asking for a kings ransom. A 1st round swap, a 3rd and 4th and maybe next years 2nd and 4th could be enough without giving up too much. The Giants save in pay and in public opinion and then they can take Sanders or even another QB. For the Panthers to drop down, it has to mean their top 3 picks are not there. Do they take TE-Warren if he drops in their lap at 8 (I do like that)? I believe they would love to drop back but again I don't think teams will pay a lot to move up unless they want a QB before the Saints (our only hope for a good value).  I'm not picking a player, just thinking of the draft in general and value. Reaching doesn't work and more and more teams are realizing that.
    • With the new DL, we should be better at edge by simple addition.   What player would have the biggest impact on the Panthers?  I still see the plan to trade back and take Emmanwori if we can find a trade partner.  Why, you ask?  S is a huge need and they have really only looked at 1 visits/meetings.  We will try to trade up for Princely in the second.  A WR in the third  (Bech or Noel).
