The Years Of Marty Hurney

Ken Lucas' strength was physical man-to-man press coverage, which was what the Panthers used that first season he was here and he excelled. Then Fox moved to a soft zone that Lucas didn't fit in at all, thus the drop-off.

fox took this team to 2 NFC title games and a super bowl with several players drafted and brought in by hurney.

does marty get credit for that too or is he only responsible for the bad stuff? i'm having trouble keeping score here.

Fox took a mostly Hurney free roster to 7-9 and then the Superbowl. But yeah Hurney rules we need more LBers and RB's please.

Fox went 8-8, in a weak division, in the weaker conference.

Carolina (Hurneys team) would have fared much better as well in that scenario

I highly doubt without Cam Newton they would have. Hurney hit the goldmine on that one, most GMs without an elite QB or facing having to go though the season with Clasuen again would have made that pick, so whatever. Newton makes this team look so much better than it is.

A pass rush would have a similar affect though not to the same extreme.

Hurney basically inherited a great pass rush and it has really gone down since sometime after 2005 while the need for a pass rush in this league has gone up. That to me equals poor team building.

yeah because that's exactly what i said right.

of course i understand that it's much more complicated than that. i don't even think marty hurney is a particularly good GM. it's not my fault that the guy i was responding to made a stupid, simple argument that was easily contradicted by something that was equally simple and unrefined.

Could argue we had better teams than the 03 squad.....injury ad coaching hurt those years.

But we got to the Superbowl relying on a ground attack and D. Hurney added Stephen Davis, Foster, Peppers, Spoon, Gross, Jake and Mr. Postseason AKA Manning Jr..... so you can't imply Hurney's guys didn't help get the team to the Superbowl. His guys were key

Yeah Proehl and Wallace too. I was just countering the guy's argument that as the roster got more Hurneycentric, we didn't have more sucess.

Without injury impacting the 05 run and full retard coaching in 08....I would argue those teams overall where just as good.

We might have the best offensive squad now in Panthers history as well

Overall I think Hurney has been a good GM, it's important to keep in mind that not all of the decisions listed by the OP were his, good or bad. The GM is always in a position to be the fall guy for decisions made at other levels in the organization.

But does avg win super bowls?

Doesn't matter what kind of talent you put in a roster when a coach makes the type decisions Fox did starting in AZ and carrying over into the next year. Talented team. Hurney doesn't coach or play the game

what's more fox had shown that he's perfectly capable of shitting the bed with an expensive, talented roster well before that.

remember 2006 when we unquestionably had a monster offseason because we went out and bought the nastiest front four in the league and got keyshawn johnson and justin hartwig? only to go 8-8? DAMN YOU HURNEY
