Can We Stop Pretending That Ron Edwards Is Anything Special

Recommended Posts

Next time I will make sure to phrase all statements so that they fit all possible scenarios. My apologies. Perhaps we should just shut down the message board because no comments can be thoroughly prefaced enough to provide 100% accurate statements.

To be clear, I did not create this thread to in any way bash Edwards. I think he will help. I created this thread because it seemed like his name was coming up in way to many threads/arguments around here, like he would be a savior. He is not that. He is someone who will collect blocks and play a role. He will be just ok at that role. If me saying that means I dont understand the system we have played and/or are supposed to play, then you are the retard, not me.

Never was it said that we needed a pro bowler at every position. That assumption was made by others apparently disagreeing with my claims about edwards. Never did I say we even necessarily needed an upgrade over Edwards. I also never said he was injury prone, just that he was injured last year which is a fact.

And re: mcclain/fua. Yes they should improve, but no they were not good last year. And yes Kearse, Neblett etc played pretty well- Neblett for two years now.

You said EVERYONE on the huddle considers him a stud. NO ONE has ever called him a stud. No, you are not saying anything new. MOST people on the huddle dont even know who Edwards is or has ever seen him play. MOST somewhat intelligent huddlers know he is not a pro bowl NT, but the truth is, he has been a starter in this league a long time, and you dont last in this league that long as a starter unless you have some skill. Last year was a fluke injury b/c he has never missed that much time in his career.

I dont even understand why this thread was even made, there are plenty with similar thoughts. But congrats for thinking you are different than EVERYONE else.

The above is exactly why this thread was made. I think all educated/mature, fans/posters realize that Edwards was brought in because he was a quality starter, who played the NT in a 3-4 for KC and would've immediately upgraded our NT position in our 4-3, and been there to mentor our young rookies. Aside from that the additions we signed (Frank Kearse, etc.) showed a lot of promise and there's no way to determine their talent and value by bringing in more DT's when the staff already has players they believe in, cost less, and show promise. LB was more of a need than DT considering Beason, and Davis' injuries, combined with the lack of depth we have there. Even with all that playing time no one emerged like James Anderson did last season when he filled in full-time after Davis' injury.

Shockey was viewed as injury prone before we signed him, and he missed what 2-3 games last season. I guess Gettis, and Beason are now injury prone as well, but I'll tell you who is TD, and Dan Connor. The lack of vision some of these posters have is astonishing, and shows an inability to see past their own personal feelings towards a situation...kinda like a female, just saying.

It's not okay for people to think he will be great, but it's okay for you to think he'll be average?

you shouldn't keep that time machine to yourself...

Everyone (on the huddle) keeps shouting about Ron Edwards like he is a stud. Yeah I get that he is a serviceable starter, but lets not act like he is much more than an average starter, at best. The guy is pretty old, just missed a whole year, was already declining before he signed with the panthers and was just ok to begin with. He will help, he is a piece of the puzzle, but he is not going to single handedly change our defense. If he had been a panther his whole career everyone would want to draft a DT to replace him, yet now he is the answer (excuse) to not drafting one. I for one, am ok with not drafting DT, even if I most certainly would have myself. Finding serviceable DTs isnt the hardest thing, the hard part is finding above average youngish DTs who can do more than just run stuff.

The real problem last year was that fua and mcclain were terrible. end of story, no room for argument. Perhaps they improve, in fact its even likely, but they were empirically bad last year. abrayo franklin could be signed for a plate of bacon and would be vastly better than those guys were last year. Ill take kearse and neblett over mcclain and fua any day.

Ron Edwards: pretty ok player, great lock room guy, reasonable contract, not a stud. This is all totally ok, but lets not keep pretending the reality is something else.

Can you stop pretending like your on the coaching staff.

it's funny once we drafted Keuchley, SOME people forgot how injury prone Connor is and totally forgot about Davis' and Beason's injuries.

Quick, who was the DT on the Chargers when they were ranked #1 under Rivera? Surely an all-pro level talent, right?

Antonio Garay, signed off of the Jets' practice squad. Same age, body, and talents as Edwards, only not as good.

Rivera's scheme doesn't require anything more, Edwards is the ideal fit for it.

Who were the DTs when Rivera was coaching a top ranked defense in chicago?

Oh, right, tommie harris and tank johnson

Wow. Threads like this one make me glad that I'm working away from the house more now. I swear over half of the current poster base for this forum just make poo up out of thin air. He's injury prone? Where in the high holy fug did that made up poo come from?

Edwards is a serviceable DT.. I venture to say you can't find anyone who has said otherwise, which most likely makes this thread obsolete... along with your other points:

Fua and McClain were simply asked to gain experience last year, per Ron Rivera.. Also, Aubrayo Franklin is a kin to bringing in Ron Edwards to play the NT role than comparing him to McClain... Franklin is also more likely to miss time due to his knees than Edwards is from torn triceps..

and people pied this? really? I guess hating on the DT position is more important regardless if the OP has a point or not...

I haven't seen a lot of Edwards so I'll have to wait till I actually see him in a game, as far as Kearse goes, he did well last year and look forward to seeing him again. But now that RR and Hurney put him on front street, Huddlers are all over him. All I can say is that I hope you're all right. I'd like to see Edwards and Kearse start and mix in Neblett, McClain. To give Edwards a breather, swap him out with Fua and Shirley to keep him fresh.
