Can We Stop Pretending That Ron Edwards Is Anything Special

Recommended Posts

The reason I am excited about Edwards playing this year is not based solely on his skill level but on the other things he brings to the front line, like maturity, stability, and experience. Edwards was a big help to the younger DTs last year after he was hurt, instead of staying home and rehabbing his injury, he was at the games encouraging his teammates and giving them advice from the sidelines. Just think how much more he can do on the field.

If he can be Buckner-esque, that would be awesome.

What I don't understand the hate for Fua and McClain. Everyone says they played horrible but what I saw was a struggling defense all around, including guys like Gamble, Anderson and Johnson. Why that was the case I don't know since I'm not a coach but injuries seemed to have played a large part. Imagine what the offense would have looked like with Stewart (Beason), Kalil (Edwards) and DeAngelo (Davis) all went down at the beginning of the season and replaced with Vaughn, Z. Williams and Goodson. Would Smith and Shockey and Olsen had the same amount of success? This is a team sport, success and failure comes from the unit together. Considering the situation I'm surprised they were dead last in defense.

Also, I thought some of our UDFA did amazing. Don't just count these guys out from competing and even winning starting positions and then playing at a high level. It's not about name recognition or draft status, it's about on the field play. And I agree with others, I liked what I saw out of Kearse in the last couple of games.

Doubtful that we would play Edwards and Shirley at the same time. Both are the same type of player...large space eating NT type. You would typically play a quicker UT along side your NT....similar to McClain, Kearse, or Neblett.

But, you never know what Rivera will Di.

Kearse is much bigger than Edwards..

This forum is for people to express opinions. No one here is acting like they know more than coaching staff. We are all passionate about the team.

So quit being an Internet bad ass. Quit being an asshole when you don't have anything to say about the thread.

LOL, yeah ok man. Whatever you say.

One thing is to be passionate another is to nitpick every god damn thing the team does or doesn't do. Look at the threads around here. Half of them are bashing a player, or a staff member. IF that's an opinion, then fine. But don't act like everything is hunky dory in the huddle and people don't bitch and complain about poo.

Fwiw, he has had more than one career injury. He has been placed on IR three times including last year. But two of those years were early in his career (when he played for Buffalo). Not that this makes him injury prone. I would guess this is about average for a DT.

I agree with the general sentiment here. We don't need him to be a superstar, just being solid will be a significant improvement. And a little teaching of our two young Dt's would be great.

Agreed. He's old, injury prone, and wasn't much more than serviceable even when healthy. He can be a useful part of the rotation, but Hurney screwed up big by putting us in a position where we had to rely on him to prevent us from starting two rookies at DT.

Injury prone?

Where do you retards come up with this stuff? Morgan was injury prone, TD is injury prone, Ron Edwards is neither injury probe or a journeyman. He doesn't have to be a stud, all we need is someone who can stand their ground and let the DE's and LB's do their thing.

You're just not doing to have pro bowlers at every position or even at every level.

I think our DL will be pretty formidable this season.

Everyone? I stopped reading after that. Edwards is serviceable, nothing more, nothing less. There, I am not part of everyone, so you're OP is wrong.

Next time I will make sure to phrase all statements so that they fit all possible scenarios. My apologies. Perhaps we should just shut down the message board because no comments can be thoroughly prefaced enough to provide 100% accurate statements.

To be clear, I did not create this thread to in any way bash Edwards. I think he will help. I created this thread because it seemed like his name was coming up in way to many threads/arguments around here, like he would be a savior. He is not that. He is someone who will collect blocks and play a role. He will be just ok at that role. If me saying that means I dont understand the system we have played and/or are supposed to play, then you are the retard, not me.

Never was it said that we needed a pro bowler at every position. That assumption was made by others apparently disagreeing with my claims about edwards. Never did I say we even necessarily needed an upgrade over Edwards. I also never said he was injury prone, just that he was injured last year which is a fact.

And re: mcclain/fua. Yes they should improve, but no they were not good last year. And yes Kearse, Neblett etc played pretty well- Neblett for two years now.

I don't give a poo what he did years ago when he was a young man, when you are on the wrong side of 30 and you miss an ENTIRE season you are injury prone.
