Rivera: We Would Have Drafted Coples To Play Dt If Kuechly Wasn't There

He is to compact and not lengthy, also he was short and really only had the job of penetrating the line as opposed to total run stuffer. We wanted someone taller with more length and more consistent in stuffing the run and in general doing it all. Fletcher Cox was fine in my book even though I admit he was not the best at stuffing people at the line, I thought penetration was fine for that. Surprisingly enough, they thought Coples would be the better DT.

Last year he would have been a perfect fit as we were more of an Eagles type D penetration in the insides but inability to stop the run with inside linemen, but now we are moving away from it, and if I am looking at things correctly possibly moving to a 3-4...and Cox would straight up just not fit in a 3-4. (He would play DE in a 3-4 but it is not a good fit.)

Thanks bud :). Not sure they should move away from the Jim Johnson D since last year was a result of injuries, but we'll see what happens.

Players at DT...questions,debate, players at DE...questions, debate, players at CB (after Claiborne)...questions, debate, players at LB...Luke Kuechly, period. If you stop loving on Beast and Davis for one minute and just look at this at face value, we got one bad MFer on defense that we help in multiple areas for a decade. Rivera/Hurney>Fox/Hurney...it is what it is brahs.

Yea I think I have already given up on Otah, anyways good talk Lout. Refreshing when two people can have a decent conversation on the internet without getting at each other's throats

I agree. Don't get me wrong, if Otah has another setback, I will be the first one screaming for an OT in the draft. The FO feels that this is his year he will recover, so I have to expect they know more than I do.

Verge, please don't turn into an NJ. Not that I don't believe you about this, but if you begin to magically know the answer to every question a huddler manifests, I will call shenanigans.

This is true, I get sceptical over 'insider information' too. I'm just buying into Verge's draft knowledge.

1. Luke Kuechly

2. Morris Claiborne

3. Justin Blackmon

4. Quinton Coples

5. Matt Kalil

6. Bruce Irvin

7. Michael Brockers

8. Stephon Gilmore

9. Chandler Jones

10. Mark Barron

I thought we would have taken Barron if he was there but yet your source listed him as the last option?

Not trying to be a dick but are you an alt for njpanthers? There's other post's that make no sense when looking at your content if you actually had a source.

Normally I wouldn't care but to see your other thread go 16 pages and seemingly fooling much of the huddle I felt obligated to call you out while I sit here bored at work.

Just to be clear here, the only source that we would have taken Barron before Keuchly was Mark Carrier, director of player engagement. He's nothing more than a glorified event planner. He has literally zero to do with the scouting, personnel, and drafting department.

    • After the Chiefs game a 6'5 X would really help in the Red zone. I would also love to add Slayton in FA
    • But again, you can restock a defense through free agency much easier than offensive skill positions. Spend all our cap space on defense, take a true elite prospect who also happens to fit a position of need in T-Mac, and then use the rest of our picks on defense. Again, every season there’s a smattering of great DL, LB, and DB options in free agency, a Top 10 WR never hits free agency, ever.  The only way you get one is through the draft or giving up 1st round picks in a trade for one. If he’s there when we’re on the clock, he has to be the pick, he’s just that good.
    • It must be an early Christmas for JT O'Sullivan having Thielen back so he could put a coal in Thielen's stocking every chance he gets.  Honestly, the biggest surprise is not so much the anticipation. There were those moments here and there last year as well. It's that even that one positive quality he had seemingly vanished his first two games to where it looked like it was all but over, only for it to start coming back some until you get exclamation points all over this game film. And some of those throws were under a lot of duress, something I feel is something new. Finally, those deeper shots are starting to land. Not all of them, but enough that defenses may have to start respecting them. No guarantees whether this will end up as more of anomaly but I certainly hope it isn't. The Green Bay game was a sampler of what BY could be. Against KC, we got a meal. If we could start getting these meals regularly, we might actually have something to work with here.
