Rivera: We Would Have Drafted Coples To Play Dt If Kuechly Wasn't There

but...

the point being that they aren't desperate for a DT, which is different from saying we couldn't find anyone at all to upgrade DT. What Marty is referring to is the total panic some fans and media are going through over the DL.

When Rivera went down the list of DT's, he mentioned Cox last. Not sure if this was the order in which they had them rated, but it certainly sounded like it.

Since Cox was the consensus top rated DT, I would hope he wasn't last on any team's list at that position.

Would have been pissed if we picked couples over Cox. I think in the grand scheme of things it was good that Kuechly was there.

I was fine with Coples over Cox IF he was going to play DE...an area of need.

But, taking Coples over Cix to play DT would be a head scratcher to me.

I'm sure Matt Kalil was also up there

There is no evidence of that. I honestly don't think we would have drafted Kalil.. he doesn't fit an immediate need. Yea, Gross is getting old, but he still has a couple years left. Otah will be given every chance to come back from injury because we have seen how dominant he can be when healthy. The Kalil pick makes little sense compared to other needs on our defense.

If he was talking on every down it might be a head scratcher as well, but more and more teams are moving big DEs inside on passing downs to rush the quarterback. It is easier to outmaneuver a guard than it is a tackle.

I don't think it's that much of a head scratcher. Coples was pretty much a full-time DT in 2010 and had 10 sacks and 15.5 TFL. His production actually dipped as a DE last year. A lot of people believe he played safe last year not to get injured and lambaste him for it, but you have to remember he personally witnessed two guys negatively affected by injuries. Bruce Carter was a projected first round pick who tore his ACL late in 2010 and fell to the 2nd round and S Deunta Williams broke his leg in a freak accident in the 4th quarter of the Music City Bowl which ultimately was a career-ending injury.
