Our Weaknesses: Post-Draft Edition

Aminia Silatolu could make some mistakes early if we start him. They said he's a "grabber" on pass defense. Byron Bell 2.0

There is nothing comparable about a 1st round talent we drafted in the 2nd to an undrafted Bell. One has talent oozing out of his ears....the other doesnt

Here are what I think our weaknesses are post-draft:

Quarterback - We're obviously in a good place here with Cam and Anderson being a solid backup. Cam needing more experience and teams being able to gameplan against him more effectively are the only concerns I have.

Running Back - No worries except we can't give everyone enough carries!

Wide Receiver - You've got Smitty back to his old self again and some solid young talent to develop behind him. Will LaFell or Gettis step up to be the solid #2? Can Joe Adams come in and take the slot position right out of the gate?

Tight End - Olsen is a stud and I'm excited to see what Barnidge can do in this offense (assuming Shockey doesn't come back).

OL - Depth is a little concerning and there's not a clear cut starter at the guard position besides Hangman but the competition is there. I think Bell can handle the RT position if Otah acts like Otah assuming Bell continues to progress.

Defensive Tackle - I am optimistic about our young guys developing and Edwards returning but I think we'll end up needing to address this next year in FA or the draft.

Defense End - Johnson will start getting recognized as one of the elite at his position if the rest of the line can step up and get some pressure. The other D-end position is going to be rusher by committee. If Hardy can get consistent pressure then the D-line will do a 180 from last year. The run defense is going to get a lot better this year. Not too sure we will be able to say the same about the pass rush.

Linebacker - We have awesome starters and backups that got plenty of experience last year. Assuming Beason comes back healthy then this is the strongest position on the defense. Any snaps that Davis gets is just a bonus.

Cornerback - Gamble has one side locked down. Will Hogan step up at the #2? I know most on here want to see Captain strictly on special teams but I think he could be an above average slot corner. Assuming Hogan can be an effective starter then I think you've got a pretty solid group here with some nice depth.

Safety - Godfrey can lock down his side of the field with average cornerback play. I'm encouraged about the guys brought in to compete for the FS position. Hopefully the competition will help someone step up and become starter material because right now you can't confidently say that we have anyone on the team ready to handle it.

I know that we could stand to improve in some areas but the defense and the offense we saw last year are likely not going to be as good as we see this year. So it is hard for me to say what are going to be areas of weakness until we see the schemes this year and how our personnel are being used. I don't think that is a cop out as much as being realistic and waiting to see what develops. A team plays together and the goal is for the synergy between the parts to be better than the individual talent.

The only position that seems to remain weak is field goal kicker if we are counting on Mares to hold it down. Safety has numerous question mark from what I can see as well. Most other places we at least have good potential for the future or an incumbent starter.

Don't have a viable option at CB2. Shoulda looked at giving up a 6th for Samuel (even though Atlanta got him for a 7) and just signed Nortman through UDFA. (or Butler, if you don't feel Nortman would have been available)

Don't know if Samuel wanted to play for McDermott or if McDermott wanted him but we definitely had enough info to decide if h was right for us. Obviously thy didn't want o go that direction so they must have good reasons. Atlanta might be able to afford him this year due to a small cap hit because it is the first year of the contract but he will only get more expensive as he gets older. Not sure it made sense for us given we will have cap issues next year.

We definitely have viable options at CB2. It's not crazy to think that Hogan will be able to fill that role. We don't have PROVEN options at CB2 though. I wouldn't have been mad at getting Samuel but our cap space could be used in better places I think.
