Our Weaknesses: Post-Draft Edition

the only weakness I see is number two CB position because Munnerlyn,Butler, and Hogan are all nickel CB and J Norman is developmental player.

The only solution I can see to shore up our secondary is the trade a 5# round pick to the Cowboys for Mike Jenkins who wants out of Dallas and has regressed since 2009 Pro bowl year

Didn't some1 post stats back before the forum changed that showed that it was mainly Hardy and Anderson (Due to trying to make up for Beason and Davis being out) struggling in stopping sweeps to their side that was accounting for the overwhelming majority of our Rushing Yards surrendered?

I'm curious why you think Butler and Hogan are only suitable as nickle CB's. Please share your reasoning here.

IMO, Butler has the potential to be a #2 and we just don't know what Hogan can do yet. I agree that Norman is developmental and frankly, would rather not see Captain at CB at all.

Norman or Butler starting at the 2, with the other playing the nickle allows for Captain to be a full-time special teamer. He would honestly be the best special teams player we have. He's a monster in that aspect of the game, because he hustles, and he gives 110%. Onatolu and Smith will definitely help.

I see Nakamura starting at FS, which could allow for Martin to be pushed to special teams.

We also now have a Punter that may be able to not over-kick his coverage. And Mare will probably be gone, so we don't have to collectively hold our breath as he goes for a potential game winning kick.

I think the biggest area of concern is going to be the #2 DE (that starting one has been very average so far in his career) and the UT position. I still worry about the players on the DLine, because I really think it needs an upgrade, but obviously Rivera doesn't. He passed on Fletcher Cox, so he apparently thinks we're set.

Martin's strength despite last season is coverage.....both Martin and Godfrey are examples of the type players that you don't want on ST. Neither is good at simple tackling.....yet that is our starting duo ( or has been ) at S

STs and offense should be very good. I have no idea what Rivera is doing on defense, I mean I understand a little of the basics of the scheme, but I just feel uneasy about the players.

Hogan as our #2 CB. I'm in the dark on this guy.

Fua, McClain, Neblett, can they stop the run?

Sherrod Martin had trouble tackling big WRs and TEs, and made some really basic rookie mistakes in coverage.

Where will Luke start? If he's going to be at MLB, then he'll have to blitz a lot. Is that really a good idea?

Moving Beason to WLB is not the best use of his talents, as we've all seen.

This defensive scheme seems more complicated than most. How long is it going to take for our players to learn how to blitz and fool Drew Brees and other veteran QBs?

I can't wait to see what this defense will look like when Rivera gets it running the way he wants, but I'm not seeing the big picture atm.

That is an amazing open minded and well thought out view on the situation. Wow you need to post more often.

The main thing I see is basicly what you said, it's a lack of veteran and proven experience. A lot of unknowns.

I think we covered our needs pretty well. Then again with so many starters already signed, we didn't have the holes some people kept saying we did. We should now be good at linebacker and the Dline should be good. The secondary especially at safety is still a question marker. Offense is set and special teams will be good for the first time in forever. I am pretty stoked about the season getting under way.

We can probably add RT to the positions already mentioned.

I have no confidence in Otah playing the full season. That said, we do have a number of options to fill in, so we would be okay but not great.

I heard Otah is in the coaching staff's doghouse big time.

Otah is in a contract season. I expect him to experience some sort of awakening and have a productive, healthy season.

If this happens, IMO it would be wise to let him take a big paycheck and walk.

PROS

Full offseason

Second year with the same playbook and coordinators

New secondary coach (the one RR wanted)

71 of 71 showed up voluntarily

kuechly's the new guy and fast enough to play outside. think he gets put on the outside. RR will put them in the best position for the team to be successful

Edwards back from injury

CONS

CB2 unproven (but i have high hopes for Hogan. Second round talent fell because of off field issues)

No real star opposite Steve

Is Shock coming back? (Fug, I hope so)
