We really don't have the luxury of being cute with our 2nd round picks. Hurney has made a habit of that. We have to have guaranteed starters from the 1st and 2nd rounds for 3-4 years in order to compete for a championship. This guy has never played against decent college players, much less NFL linemen. Say what you want but there's no way to know how good he can be, which is too much of a risk for a team in our position. Very similar to the infamous Armanti Edwards pick to me,

Yeah I totally agree. This guy seems like he might need to redshirt the first year in the nfl. Sadly, I think his name will be on Marty's second round bust list in two years.

I will admit one thing about the guy I like is apparently he is mean.

The best thing for this guy to do is attach himself to the hip of gross and Steve smith.

Quite a few of the draft sites had him with a first round grade, scouts loved his nastiness when finishing off a block. Mayock had him as the third best OG and one of the top OL prospects in the draft and an Overall ranking of 37th, which still makes it a value pick.

I think the consensus is if Wharton would have agreed to a pay cut he would still be on the team.

Well Wharton signed a three-year 10 million dollar contract with the Bengals, we must have been not really been offering him that much.

Yeah, this guy was legitimately a late 1st/early 2nd round prospect. I had been talking him up in my mock drafts here for months now. Say what you will about the pick, it wasn't a reach. We took him right about where he was projected to go.

So the guy isn't a good student? So what? Rivera said he had sat down with the coaches and they felt comfortable that he could learn the offense and blocking scheme and such. Plus, he's playing between two really smart players in Gross and Kalil - Ryan especially being one of the smartest players in the league.

He'll be fine. Low end projection is a solid guard like Geoff Hangartner; high end is a Pro Bowler and elite guard. He'll be at LEAST as good as Wharton in his prime, IMO. And pretty quickly, too.

Hey bros I hope the guy is a beast.

It will just be aggravating as all hell when we are getting torched by running backs this year and his fat ass is on the bench.

I really can't see our Guard situation being so overwhelmingly competitive that he wont start the season. Plus Rivera strikes me as a guy that will always pick the type of players that he can challenge to live up to expectaction(like he did with Cam, rookie dt's, probably wud have done for Hogan had he been healthy). If he believes a player has the talent and potential he'll give them enough chances to prove it unlike some coaches that you already knew the rook wud sit on the bench in favor of a vet. I totally expect him to start.

At guard he'll be free to let his best trait shine. His big, nasty beast can come out and play to disrupt opponent d-lines/LB's. He seems to be somewhat of an untamed animal, but I think our O-line, specifically Otah, could stand to have some of that rub off. (Otah has the size & skills, but not the mentality- if Otah can even remain healthy.)

Based on what?

If you're going to bump a two week old thread, at least provide some insight.

You are right. I probably should have not posted. Sorry man. It was a random thought based on reading an article today which had him saying that he was having difficulty with the mental part of camp. After thinking about his comments and reflecting on what you said I see that I overreacted and should not have said anything.
