2002: DeShaun Foster, Mediocre

2003: Bruce Nelson, Bust

2004: Keary Colbert, Bust

2005: Eric Shelton, Bust

2006: Richard Marshall, Mediocre

2007: Dwayne Jarrett, Bust

Ryan Kalil, Pro Bowler

2008: None

2009: Everette Brown, Bust

2010: Jimmy Clausen, Bust

2011: None

Question for those that assume Kuechly will be great because of Hurney's perfect 1st round track record: Do you also assume that Silatolu will be mediocre at best because of Hurney's 8/9 track record there with getting mediocre-to-bust players in the 2nd round?

I had it thrown in my face a couple of times. But no probally not hundreds of people are vocalizing it. But anyway, to those people Mills Fans makes a good point correct?

I suppose, but using draft track record as a reason to applaud a pick makes no sense at all.

That list is hard to look at but a couple of notes:

Marshall and Foster were solid players while with the Panthers. No they weren't pro bowlers but they were starters for more than one season. Is there another option besides pro bowl, mediocre and bust?

Some of the players that ended up busts were still good picks at the time. Jarrett and Colbert were good picks but just were never able to develope into their potential.

The bad picks on the list are the ones that I saw as reaches. Shelton, Brown and Clausen primarily.

I'd agree with this. Like someone else said Hurney hit on 2nd round line man. I for one believe Bruce Nelson would have been a stud except for an undiagnosed degenerative hip condition. Whenever he played he was very effective.

Hurney's 2nd round record isn't good, nobody can deny that. I'm a Hurney supporter, but even I have to admit he's been awful in the 2nd. He makes up for it by being money in the 1st, but in the 2nd he's very iffy.

Thing is, that's why I love this pick so much. Most of those busts were skill position players and they always tend to be much tougher to judge. OL is generally the easiest position to project, especially interior OL, and especially in the first 2 rounds. Ryan Kalil, for example.

Hurney, I think, realizes his mistakes in the 2nd and that's why he took Silatolu - a safe pick - here rather than risk the pick on another DE, WR, or DB. Hurney has been very good when drafting OL early. Only Bruce Nelson has been a bust and that was all injuries. Jeff Otah is the same way, but when he's healthy he's been a beast.

I see this as Hurney switching up his 2nd round strategy and going strict BPA at the safest position possible. I fully expect Silatolu to be a Pro Bowl caliber guard inside of 2 seasons. He'll be much closer to a Ryan Kalil than a Dwayne Jarrett.

While they didnt pan out many of those players were considered steals or had a pedigree coming out that supported where they were picked.
