Everything teh kurb says makes sense but we're talking Marty Hurney here. Like a race horse with blinders when he sees LB or RB in the 1st he's locked into the finish line, oblivious to everything: around him.

But there is still quality at areas of need in the 2nd round, things may work out.

I agree 100% with Kurb. If the team decides to move on without Davis, only then will I be happy about this pick. Just the thought of him sitting on the bench if Davis comes back and stays healthy pisses me the hell off.

It seems to me that the FO believes that the DT position is going to get better by default since Edwards is back and McClain and Fua have a year under their belt. There are still some good pass rushers left that we should have the chance to get in the 2nd. If they pick one up and add in Edwards then your entire front 7 (not just the front 4) has gotten exponentially better.

This also addresses the possibility that Davis AND Beason aren't playing as well as they did pre-injuries or even at all.

Of course I remember them, and acknowledge the beast that Morgan was that season, especially in the SB, but our calling card on defense that year was our D-line above all other units. Do you dispute that?

I hear your points Kurb and you make some good ones, DL is very important and if we don't keep those beasts off of our LB'ers having "the best LB's in the NFL" won't matter, you're right. But maybe the FO is looking at this a different way... just speculation on my part, but maybe they really are happy with the guys we have (Edwards, et al.) and think that getting a guy like this that is (from everything I've seen on him) a "pure" football player in the mold of guys like Dan Morgan, Brian Urlacher, Ray Lewis, etc. was a good call. Plus we all know that Hurney likes to make sure he's picking a "hit" in the first round and that's really not a bad overall draft strategy.

I don't know if I buy the theory that this is "last call" for TD... I really don't think this pick had anything to do with him. I hope, I really hope he can come back and play ball, but I doubt it, at least not for a full season...

I just think they picked this kid because they thought he was the best defensive player on the board.

I watched Cox several times last year with Miss St and fell in love with him...as a second round developmental player. Beware the player that shoots up at the last minute.

It's not a sexy pick, but I'm reminded of the Onion headline that came out shortly after the New Orleans craziness "Panther admit to paying a bounty to anyone who could make a tackle."

Luke is an out of the box tackling machine who can cover TE's. He's Dan Morgan 2.0. Hopefully without all the injuries.
