I Do Not Hate Luke Keuchly

I really don't.

I have made some digs here and there comparing him to lesser LB'ers, but he has great measurables, seems like a smart kid, and obviously impressed the Panthers FO enough for them to make him a top 10 pick.

I do however hate where the Panthers picked him.

Before I get into this name me the starting Lb'ers of the Super Bowl Champion NY Giants?

Dont google it, just name them.

Most of you cant.

In the SuperBowl their starters were

SLB

59 Michael Boley

MLB

53 Greg Jones

WLB

94 Mathias Kiwanuka

The Giants base their defense on a powerful Defensive Line generating pressure and freeing up their Linebackers (whom few can name) to make plays in the running game.

The Panthers however appear to have taken a different approach.

Our Defensive line is made up of basically no bodies (minus Charles Johnson). We do not generate a ton of pressure and sacks and as of right now our LB'ers are going to be fighting off Guards and Tackles when trying to make plays in the running game.

The above is the center piece of my disdain for the 2012 first over all pick.

Why is the front office building the defense on such a shaky foundation ?

Why in a division...,a LEAGUE for that matter, where QB's are ruling the world are we not working to generate more pressure and sacks?

Why do we have 3 first round picks invested in a LB'er group, not to mention almost 100million dollars over the next 5 or so years, when the NFL as a whole seems to be devaluing the LB'er position more and more?

What good is the "Best LB Corps" in the NFL if they are being assfuged by offensive linemen the whole game and making tackles 3-5 yards on the positive side of the LOS ?

Had the Panthers traded back and gotten a couple of picks and then taken this kid, I would be less upset.

Had the Panthers decided to build from the inside out on both sides of the lines I would be thrilled.

But I fail to see where this will be a significant impact to improving this defense.

Had the significant talents on the DL (Cox to name the favorite) been gone, this pick would be a ton easier to swallow.

We arent running a 3-4 or a 4-4. IF (and I agree its unlikely) all of our starters from last season are on the field this kid could sit on the bench all season. Are we going to move our Superstar MLB to WLB so this kid ecan thrive ? The feeling of ineptitude here is stifling to me.

I even had someone tweet to me we could ROTATE fuging LINEBACKERS to keep them fresh now ?

and you all ask me why I am on my period. BS like this put me on my period.

Feel free to continue taunting me and calling me out, thats why we are here, to debate and have a good time.

I hope I am wrong, I hope he turns out to be a superstar game changer. I fail to see how that can happen however, w/o the pieces in place around him to help him succeed.

who would you have drafted, assuming trading down wasn't an option? Coples? Ingram? Gilmore?

I would have taken Cox and been thrilled he was there.

He could start over Hardy at LDE and move inside to DT on 3n longs.

Much like Justin Tuck.

But I am not a scout, im not a GM, nor am I a Coach.

And its likely they are all smarter than me.

Im just searching for some understanding here.

i think chase blackburn was actually starting MLB for the giants during the superbowl... and i think that helps your argument.

Could be, I just did a quick google.

I know he made a big interception.

And to add to your point Kurb, think back to our own Panther squad that made it to SB 38. I think it's easier to recall our D-Line from that season (Pep, Rucker, Jenkins, Buckner) than our LB's. I agree that games are won/lost in the trenches, and there must be a belief amongst the FO and coaching staff that the guys drafted last year with a healthy Ron Edwards will do the job needed upfront.

I hope so. The addition of Luke to me signals the end of the Thomas Davis era in Carolina.

I don't think the FO expected LK to be there. His draft grades were up there with the top 5. I agree DT was a need and Cox seemed a great fit for all the reasons you talk about.

But this kid is a pure talent and he was higher on their board. I'm watching highlights of him all morning and just can't stop.

LK is going to be a force on this team for a long time to come.

I am tired of hearing about the Giants Defense.

Yeah, they went 9-7 and got extremly hot with and Elite QB.

They have an awesome defensive line in a scheme that requires one.

The top two teams last season in sacks, missed the playoffs.

The team reguarded as the best defense all season, ranked 9th in sacks.

We don't have the same scheme. We need different things. A 4-3 is not just a 4-3. Its way more complex than that.

There are other teams who have strenghts that their team builds on. The Ravens have been dominant, I know its a 3-4, relying on their LB. Yes I am aware Ngata is a difference maker. But, the Panthers didn't think their was a D-lineman capable in the first.

There is no perfect blue print. Pass rush is important, but with our division using 3-5 step drops all of the time. Pressure cannot always be possible.

We got tremendous value at a need position.

Plus, I am thinking on third and long that TD can play a stand up rush end. like Clay Matthews :)

    • i felt good for those few games that bryce didn't look like the worst in the league. all that fell apart again sunday.  i'm borderline just bailing on it all. i've been hanging on by a thin thread for several years. i mean it's not even fun to watch any football right now.
