Thomas Davis is done as a Panther. Not saying we're going to cut him on Monday or anything (though it wouldn't shock me) but by taking the best defensive player in the draft in the top-10 we're essentially announcing to the league that we're moving on from T.D.

I don't think this pick was about Davis - I think they took the legitimate BPA on their board regardless of position - but that's just the way it goes. Kuechly will be impossible to keep off the field. He's too good. And I have a feeling Davis - even if he does manage to get healthy - would rather get a chance to play somewhere else than sit on the bench here.

Fact is you don't take a guy in the top-10 for him to sit and we can't start 4 LB's in our scheme. That means one of our guys will be let go; it's obviously not Beason and Anderson is healthy and productive. Davis isn't right now.

I feel bad for the guy and am rooting for him. He's been great for us and I hope he can rebound and get his career back on track, but it's clear the organization has made the decision to move on by taking Kuechly.

Keep them for depth or trade pieces.

You don't keep a guy like Davis around for depth. His cap number will be too high after this year and even if he's healthy he'll want to start and will likely request a trade if he isn't starting here.

Kuechly will be entrenched as a starter by mid-season and keeping Davis won't be an option. It's POSSIBLE we keep T.D. through this season if he's healthy and cut him next offseason, but even then it's just a really awkward situation with both of them on the roster. I have a feeling Hurney/Rivera will come to the conclusion that we're better off just cutting ties and moving on with Kuechly.

That assumes Davis stays healthy, of course, which is FAR from certain. And even if he does it's equally far from certain that he'll be anywhere close to the player he once was.
