Huddlers' Analysis Of Kuechly As Our Pick

I am curious, did we deny trade requests for our pick? I wasn't watching ESPN or whatever but I am curious why everyone is upset we didn't trade down

I wasn't watching either, but as many trades as there were, I think it's safe to assume there was an offer somewhere.

I think they're upset because the flurry of trades basically ended at us (technically the Dolphins, but everyone knew who they were picking anyway. They weren't really a trade option). People are probably disappointed we didn't trade down too if we were just gonna take a non-pass rusher LB.

Wasn't crazy about the pick at first, bit this almost ensures that there is no pressure to rush Beason or TD back, while adding an unbelievablely important piece to the future of our d. LK is a tackling beast and is light years better than Conner. He will play all 3 LB positions and he is heady enough and has the instincts to be a real leader on this d. Again, I wasn't crazy about the pick, but after I've had time to process I realize we just locked up probably the most important positions in this scheme for a long time. God willing, the kid should have a great career and will most def play on CAMs level!

I don't know why you would assume that. I think if the offer was any good we would have taken it. We were not in prime area for a team to jump into IMO. Only team I could see was maybe the Eagles, but even that I doubt they would have given us value - I don't think teams were willing to part with what it would take to move up to #9 given who went before that. if we were a bit higher we could have traded down maybe but I think we were stuck where we were.

To be clear, if the OP was "tl;dr"...

I love the pick, and predicted it. But, if there was an option to trade down, I would've preferred it.

LB wasn't as big of a need as DT and CB... But, if Kuechly comes in and plays up to his potential he can be a game-changer and ultimately make it irrelevant whether we could've picked up two or three more players in his stead.

I assume that because I'm sure we weren't the only team interested in Kuechly. Also, Gilmore went at 10th, and there were plenty of rumors about teams wanting to jump into the top 10 to get him.

What it likely came down to was Hurney and Rivera's preference. Did they find more value in picking up extra picks or Kuechly? they obviously felt Kuechly was a talent they couldn't pass up and preferred him over trading back.

Hurney didn't consider offers. he said if Kuechly was there he would stick and pull the trigger. He considers him the best linebacker by far and a huge talent. He was BPA at 9 and they wanted him. Rivera loves him and he knows linebackers. They both said it didn't take long for them to figure out he is special. They think he is the best cover linebacker in the draft. Mayock said he was the best cover linebacker he has ever evaluated. If you are trying to get better in pass coverage and think about linebacker as the second level then he is an upgrade over everyone else we have. If we pick corner in round 2 or 4 we have upgraded the pass defense of the third level. Bring in a pass rusher and we are pretty set.

Now lets see if it comes to fruition.

Good post P55.

I think his pass coverage may be the most exciting part of his game especially considering the shift to emphasis on slot receivers and TEs in offensive schemes across the league.

I truly am excited about the pick, I just don't like the feeling of giving up on one of the guys we already have that were starters when healthy. Then again, as I mentioned in one of the threads about him before the draft, I think Kuechly became even more valuable to us because I think Hurney and Rivera aren't betting on Beason being 100% this season.

This is rational and fair enough. Like you said, I hope to see their logic pan out like they hope it will.
