You're assuming that just because we took a LB that Hurney is more comfortable with the other positions than he is LB. That isn't true. Person reported earlier that Kuechly was taken because he was the "BPA."

You're also assuming that LB play was a root cause for our struggles last year. Even with the injuries, it wasn't. Poor DL play is the root of your entire defensive success. Regardless of scheme, you have to have a strong DL that can enable your LB's and Secondary to do what is asked of them.

Having a strong DL isn't a "scheme" thing. It's a "football" thing. That'd be like saying you don't need a good OL simply because you run a WCO.

Yes, but in this scheme you don't need to have an elite interior line. Which is the part you're not getting. This scheme requires an average interior line and great linebackers. Anything above average on the interior line is a bonus. All we need are for our DT's to hold their position and blockers and not to be constantly pushed into the second level.

I'm not assuming anything; I am going by what Rivera said. Obviously there was more than just LB, but it was a major factor.

I never said we did not want a strong DL, I said that they may feel better about it than they did our LBers. Either that, or they thought *so highly* of Kuechly that they took him anyway. So either we are filling a giant need that the FO perceives, or we got what they thought wast he first or second best defensive player in the draft - and likely by quite a bit.

You're actually trying to convince me that having good linebackers is more important than having a good DL?

False, padawan.

Not a scheme thing. It's a football thing.

Rivera's defense works best with average and above line play but requires great linebacker play to really be successful. So yes, in this particular defense, I am.

Surely you realize that the lanes in our defense that the LBers go through are created by the DTs.
