Kuechly On Sports Science Espn

My intentions were not renew the debates but rather post something I felt may be interesting to the forum,

To say sports science has no value though is ridiculous.Have you seen the ones the same organization has done on special ops guys or martial arts champions. If not you will change your mind on the validity of the information..

On my defensive player board I have Luke 2nd behind Claborne and then Barron and Gilmore as the best defensive players in the draft but I have no idea at this point what Rivera thinks are must have picks to put the best defense on the field.I have no idea how he has Hogan graded or Nesbit or Shirley as Dts.I do know he would like to improve our pressure on the qb which could mean anything from a DT, DE or defensive tweener I think the only thing any of us know are the players he has had workouts with.As most on the board I am a Davis and Beason fan but I also know they are both coming off serious injuries.I am sure the Panthers have Docs evaluating the medical progress and expectations.

Beason announcing he is at 80 percent currently and Thomas Davis giving it another go...sure we dont need any linbackers...

- we can just pick up free agents to fill in..you know..like last season...

Although id rather reach for a corner in the first,if Cox is drafted, and get Kendricks in the second if linebacker is a target for the front office.

*also if anyone is comparing Luke to Dan Conner it is only because he is a white guy. Luke has similar measurables as Pat Willis in terms of size and speed.

No he is not a blitzing Lber but we do not run a 3-4 and blitzing was not his assignment at BC where his value is a stopper.

What happens when we get Luke K, replaces TD at outside? or replaces Beason in the middle? If he can truly play outside which seems like a waste of Luke K's true mlb talent I am fine with it. What do you guys think if we pick him does he start day 1 at middle or outside?

Doesn't matter. Putting him and Beason on the field together makes us better.

He's a slam dunk but I feel like the LB position isn't nearly as important as pass rushers and scorers. We draft BPA, so he wouldn't surprise me.

I do think he will be the BPA but agree a pass rusher is what Rivera wants.

To add to this conversation, we don't really know how the Panthers have graded out players in this draft. For example if they decide they need a linebacker, where do they have Kuechly graded out versus other guys. If as I believe, he is a special talent then he might be well worth the 9th pick. On the other hand if they have 5 or 6 guys with similar grades that can be obtained later in the draft, then you go elsewhere with the 9th pick or trade down. The same applies to DT, DE or corner. Most people talk about the 9th pick as if that is the only one we have yet drafts are often decided more by who you pick up in later rounds than in the first. For example picking up Gettis and Hardy in the 6th helped the 2010 draft when we had no first and Clausen under-impressed rather than were irrelevant and afterthoughts.

If we can get a pass rusher who is very good in the second, then I think we may very well go elsewhere in the first. Unless we think there is better talent later on at other positions,

You know what makes us, hell any defense better?

Pass Rush and Stopping the pass.

You can argue about Coochie all you want but what we need is help at pass rush and stopping the pass.

We need depth at LB. And since we're going by "Well Beason said-" That's coming from the goddamn head coaches mouth.

How many playoff berths did Pat Willis have before Aldon Smith came in wrecking poo.

Yeah. None.

Not saying Byakuya Kuchiki is a bad player and wouldn't make us better, but we desperately need help getting to the QB.

Cox. Coples. Ingram who I doubt we'd take. Someone to boost our ability to get to the QB.

Seriously how many superstar LBs do the Giants have?

We also need help stopping the pass. Our secondary has more holes than our LB core.

Cooties would make a nice pick, sure, but damn we have more pressing needs than a great tackler.

Actually our philosophy over the years has been just the opposite, run the ball and stop the run and make a team one dimensional by forcing them to pass the ball. Fox built the defense based on running the ball and stopping the run. And we had better defenses under him than we do now. Sure the rules have evolved to favor the pass but balanced attacks and teams that run and pass well still do better as a whole. Even teams like New England who folks think pass all the time still run the ball 42% of the time.

Anyone who saw us last year get ripped in run defense and doesn't think we need to shore that up are not paying attention. We were 25th in run defense and that was better than when we started the year. We were 24th in pass defense so yes we need help there too, but we need solid people against the run and pass not simply a pass rusher.
