Why The Panthers Won't Take Blackmon If He's Available At #9.

I know there are a lot of Panther fans that would bust a nut if Justin Blackmon fell to the Panthers at #9, and I actually think there's a decent chance he could. But I can tell you why the Panthers will not draft him even if he's available:

He has a DUI arrest. Granted this happened in 2010 and there doesn't seem to be a lot of concern about this heading into the draft. With drafting Cam Newton, who had character concerns of his own coming into the league and appears to have learned and grown from them, the Panthers have shown they would take a risk on a guy who has had off-field issues. But Cam's off field issues didn't involve alcohol. After Dwayne Jarrett racked up more DUI's than TD receptions, I can't see the Panthers investing their high first rounder on a guy who could be the second coming.

Don't be surprised if he's passed over.

Some people actually learn fr one DUI. I had one in 2009, and have never drivin since then even after having 1 beer.

It's not fair to lump Blackmon into DJ territory and not into every other person who learned from their mistake.

He is his own individual, and I can't pretend that I know for a fact that this was a one time thing, but you can't assume he's a raging alcoholic with no regard for the outside world, and with an inability to learn lessons from life's past transgressions.

What about at the number one pick?

Cam didn't have any concerns with alcohol. And why I make this comparison is that the Panthers have been burned by a successful college WR that had a party boy mentality before, and likely won't pick him for that reason among others.

You said "off-field problems" and while people may argue about the severity or the meaning of those, you can't deny Newton had 'em on his record.

Worth noting that the Panthers do a lot of things differently since Ron Rivera became the head coach.
