Bill Polian's Advice On Drafting Top 10-15 Picks

He was talking about making value with a high pick in the first round of the draft. So he set priority on who/what to select first.

1) Player that scores TDs ...not available then,

2) Player that turns the ball over... not available then,

3) Player that plays cornerstone defensive position (DT,NT,WLB)....not available then,

4) Player that plays a position of need

Floyd will be there, but I have a hard time seeing the Panthers take him. I wouldn't be opposed though.

I think this is a fine set of rules assuming that the talent level among all possible picks is the same AND you're not overloaded on one roster spot (3 RBs anyone?) but in the real world it's a gross over-simplification of a complex process that won't do much except give the internet fuel to argue with one another.

What if there's a transcendent talent at tier 3 and a starting quality but less talented player is at Tier 1 / 2?

I suppose I just dislike when the talking heads try to turn drafting into a flow chart to make it understandable for the masses. It takes teams of people months to maybe get it right and analysts give us "here are the four steps to the successful use of early picks".

While I don't really like the kind of team that he built there, I don't for a second think that he didn't know what he was doing.

He built a team that score quickly, and rush the passer, knowing that you had to pass to catch up.

That kind of team is built to win 12 games every year, and struggle in the playoffs.
