Do Teams Need A Shut Down Corner Anymore?

1989

Recommended Posts

Was listening to Colin Cowherd this morning and he brought up an interesting point. The 2 teams that met in the Superbowl had terrible cornerback play. New England and New York. New England was ranked dead last in pass coverage and was a couple of inches away from winning the Superbowl while teams with exceptional corner back play like the JETS and Eagles didn't even make the playoffs....

So this had me thinking. As sexy as it is and as much as I would like for us to take a high profile corner like Gilmore or Clayborne would we not be better off with someone like Cox, Brockers, Kalil (if he ever slid that far), Reiff or Coples in the 1st round?

The league is certainly changing where you dont need a "Shut down" corner anymore.

*SIDE NOTE- He also spoke about how this is the deepest draft he's ever seen for WR's. That has me pretty excited to possibly find an awesome WR possibly in round 5 or beyond.

Thoughts?

I don't think you need a shutdown corner anymore, but I DO think you need a set of competent corners. While the Pats and Giants didn't have great CBs, both teams CBs, and especially Sterling Moore and Antrell Rolle (I think he rotated between CB and S, correct me if I'm wrong), stepped their play up in the playoffs. While I feel we have one great CB in Gamble, I don't think we really have a true #2, starter-worthy corner (Brandon Hogan may be that guy, but that remains to be seen). But yes, I agree with the general premise that I would rather take a guy like Cox, Brockers or Coples, especially with the abject state of our defensive line save CJ.

Neither of those 2 offenses are driven by 1 WR. I think that tells the biggest story.

Shutdown corner is great if you are playing the Panthers

Thats a great thought. Hopefully that's not the consensus anymore with LaFell picking up his game and the return of Gettis. Gettis, in my opinion, will be great.

you may be able to get by without top flight CB play, but you had better have one of two other things on your team:

1. A completely nasty Front 4 that can wreak havoc on the QB

2. An offense that can score at will and does not go through lapses

We definitely don't have #1.....and with a 2nd year QB, the consistency on offense is still a work in progress. See games last year where we had long periods in games where the offense sputtered.

I have high hopes for Hogan! I see us taking DL help in the first and CB help in the second. If Kirkpatrick is there in round 2 I say we take him.

All about offense in today's league. Part of me wants Carolina to take Floyd now....might never get a shot at a WR this high for some time.

I don't think we need Floyd and I really want to see what LaFell and especially Gettis can do. That being said, I wouldn't exactly be disappointed if we do indeed take Floyd.

As you noted both the Giants and the Patriots had high powered offenses who could finish in the fourth quarter. Part of the rationale for drafting offense this year is to make sure we can score 25-30 points a game consistently. New England's defense wasn't good during this year but when you score 30 points a game it doesn't have to be. Both teams were much better in he playoffs when it counted.

I am still in favor of going defense in this draft at least with the first 3 picks. After that I am fine wih BPA whether it is offense or defense. If this draft is heavy with WRs, we should get a good guy in the fifth or sixth round,

All about not having drop off at WR in today's game.....draft your future stud now and as Smitty fades he should climb into the role. You don't look to replace Smith once it is obvious he can't handle the load. We know that day is coming sooner rather than later.

I think Gettis is overhyped. Silly to avoid drafting Cam's future #1 bc of a 6th rounder who ran the deep route well 4 times.

I don't expect them to draft Floyd. They need to get Cam a #1 though soon. He needs to be learning with Cam.

I listened to Colin as well and I thought he was talking BS........especially with the example of the Jets and Philly with their CB's...........

Should we say the same about LT's seen as Jake Long and Joe Thomas both play for crappy teams. The one constant for the most part about being a good team is to have a good QB. The defenses of the Superbowll in 2011 were ranked 1 and 2 I believe...this superbowl the defenses of both teams werent ranked all too high. People like to change their opinions of what is needed to succeed based on who is winning at the time.

    • I have no clue how much he will be on the field. I hope he plays well and doesn't get injured. Keep in mind that rookie rbs are typically hampered by struggling a bit with pass protection assignments. It seems it is a bit more of an adjustment from the college game.
