Greg Cosell Podcast On D-Lineman

Man Strength

Johnson was drafted under a different scheme, so he doesn't count.

Keiser played OLB in college in a 34.

Applewhite played OLB both in San Diego, and some for us last year. And yes, he did play DE, but that was in subpackages.

Dillard I'm not sure about.

We paid Johnson 76 million to be in this scheme so he does count.

Again we said Keiser was a good DE for us and were excited to have him. Applewhite and Dillard are linebackers as well will eddge rush.

You are making my point. Ingram gives us an elite edge rusher, considered the best DE in the draft, and can play linebacker as well. 3 of his sacks have come at the 1 technique where he blew by a slower guard in pass blocking. This guy can play wherever we want him to and offers a unique ability.

But I won't go into pages of posts because I would be surprised if we pick him.

If we switched to a 34, I would LOVE to have Ingram. Like I said previously, I think he is one of the absolute best players in the draft. I know he can be a DE in a 43, but so can DeMarcus Ware. Is that where you want him to be, though? I see Ingram becoming the next DeMarcus Ware. Period. That's one of the highest praises I can give to a guy, because I think Ware is one of the 10 best players in the entire NFL.

I think, as it stands though, we have more pressing needs. With above-average type DEs/Pass Rushers in the 2nd round, we could get both a 3 technique that can generate a pass rush, which we do need, and a pass rusher that could be rotational this year, and be a stud next year.

That's what I'm saying.

And btw, I'm not usually someone who "attacks" people. But when condescending remarks are made, I'm going to respond, for future reference.

How about Keiser who Hurney said yesterday they were high on.

Keiser- 6'3" 261

Switching gears a bit, but I did not hear this--must have missed it. What did he say? The reason I am interested--I think we are set at DE if we can get the CB play that will allow us to blitz more. Secondly, if we can get some inside pressure, all DEs get better. Keiser had 4 sacks in 8 games, playing sparingly in a few of them. Hardy should improve if we can limit his reps, something Keiser and Applewhite should be able to do.

For my friend P55.

http://www.nfl.com/v...r-Melvin-Ingram

Some teams don't think he can be a 4-3. Short arms and size is better for him to be a 3-4 OLB or MLB.

So the discussion was about which linebacker would be better. Honestly it was pretty lame to compare since they would be used differently in a 4-3. Kueckly is a traditional linebacker and Ingram would be a DE with his hand down most of the time. They didn't discuss our zone blitz scheme so they were talking generalities. As for short arms, that is really a much bigger issue with offensive guys no defensive guys, Long arms are nice but short ones are not the big issue some folks make them out to be. After all the difference between long arms and short ones is 2 inches.

A few weeks ago Marty and Rivera both said they felt good about his production in limited action. Yesterday on NFL Sirius, Marty also said he was pretty happy with Kearse and Neblett inside. He although thought that McClain and Fua would be much improved given they got starting experience.

I have to preface this as saying that I am no 'expert', but I do know football. In regard to the DTs, I've watched as much video I could get my eyes on for the top 6 or more (cox, brockers, poe, reyes, still, wolfe), since I saw how much that hurt us last year. Only other position I committed that many hours to this year is CB.

I have seen the exact same thing as Cosell & he IS an expert. I have a lot of respect for him. I think Ingram (OLB/DE) is talented too, but he's not a favorite of mine.

The problem I see now, some teams may trade ahead of us to get Cox. Other options are to trade down or take Floyd, but if our D plays like they did last year again, no amount of offense can save us.

Just listened to the whole thing. That was just absolutely great, I found all of it really interesting. *Warning, this post is gonna be very bullet-point-y*

For example, he said that he thinks that Cox is by far the best DT in the draft and would be shocked if he didn't get picked by Fisher at 6. This makes a lot of sense. Not only does Fisher love the D line, he often picks a guy that he loves, earlier than where he's projected to go. Can you imagine Blackmon falling to the Rams and Jeff Fisher passing on him for Fletcher Cox? That would be cool and honestly, I think it's more likely than people think.

I found his discussions on Poe also interesting and it has made me like the kid more. Why does he play high all the time though, is it really just coaching? That's a pretty basic thing to coach wouldn't you think?

Shoutouts to ma boi Jerel Worthy. They liked the guy but said that he struggles with double teams and though he's really quick, both with his feet and his arms, he's not a great pass rusher at this point. I think these are fair points.

If we asked Cosell to rank the DT's, I think it'll probably look like

1. Cox

2a. Poe

2b. Worthy

4. Brockers

I wonder if he would even take Brock in the 1st round.

I liked the stuff on Ingram and Coples too. They both said that Ingram's a top 10 talent with the ability to play in multiple positions and fronts. This is super important in today's NFL where defences spend more than 50% of their plays in their sub packages. Coples on the other hand they weren't so high on. They like his strength more than his speed. DT > DE? I wonder where he would be fit in their DT rankings.

Hope Hardy is not riding his motorcycle this Summer. We'll never know, but I wonder how much his injuries affected him last year. I agree that he could be an above average NFL DE if we can get an inside pressure DT.
