Bigger Problem: Interior Pass Rush Or Run Defense

Our run D was bad, but our D did force a lot of 3rd and longs. Unfortunately when we did, the opposing QB had all day to throw. The DEs came off the edge and had the QB in sight but he would just move up into the pocket where he had all the time needed. Destroy the pocket on 3rd down and get your D off the field.

Pass rush (especially given the talent at QB in our division)

When Brees has time to throw he is about the best there is. When he's hurried and pressured, he becomes erratic and will turn it over.

Our problem with the saints over the last three years is our inability to pressure Brees. He's had time to just sit back there and pick us a part. A lot of credit goes to the saints oline (however it has taken a step back with the loss of Nicks), but Brees is deadly when he has time.

Get somebody up the middle that can push his center back in his lap. That will result in Gamble and our CB2 looking infinitely better against them.

As another poster mentioend earlier, our run defense will be better with the additions of Beason and Edwards.

Both are one in the same. Upgraded the DT spot would improve both. When was the last time we had a first round DT?

That's exactly right! Lots of people are screaming that CB is a bigger need, but if the QB has all day to throw,it doesn't matter who is covering WRs because SOMEONE will get open. The best way to stop the pass is to prevent it from leaving the QBs hand or make him throw earlier than needed to complete it ( or for minimal gain) improve the DT spot and our Pass D will be exponentially better.

And stopping the run up the middle forces plays to the outside for the DEs and LBs to clean up.

It depends what impact Rivera wants to see next year. While I see good DTs with Cox,Brockers and etc.I do not see them making much of an impact next year.I see the league going toward the situation elite rusher which do not warrent a ist round pick.Unless I am reading Rivera wrong he wants play makers now.Guys I see in the first are Justin Blackmon and Floyd.I like Lafell but for the air coyall he does not stretch the field nor have the separation. I see his drafting strategy totally different than Fox ,He is not in love with players that the fans or Fox was..I see us asking a trade or trade up or down to get want Rivera wants.Same deal with the Jimmy Johnson Defense with zone blitzes and mismatches to create mismatches.

These are exciting times and less not be to disappointed if we draft somewhat of an unconventional approach to the draft.

Its air Coryell.

Weren't the words from RR mouth that we needed to fix the pass rush?

I said that need an elite pass rush but it may not come from drafting a DT.That was my point. If I am not wrong the Jiim Johnsons defense requires gap control from the DT and zone blitzes that create mismatches

Just don't see how the DEs played bad against the pass...our lack of pass rush came from a clear lack of push from the DT spot. Fix the inside pass rush and you fix the entire pass rush. And I'm not say I wouldnt like a pass rushing DE just that DT would solve our pass rush problem.

Pass rush. Like someone said, a lot of rushing yards came from off tackle or off end, and a lot of big run plays were because an end edged inside to help because the interior couldn't hold up, thereby losing contain.

The knocks on Hardy about his run defense are because of exactly that, him peeking inside and trying to help because the two rookies were horrible.

And as far as LaFell is concerned

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Panthers "really like" third-year WR Brandon LaFell and believe he's "poised for a breakout." Some observers have pointed to David Gettis' return from a torn ACL as reason to think Carolina is comfortable at receiver, but LaFell's expanded role might mean more inside the organization. The Panthers have made no attempt to re-sign free agent Legedu Naanee. LaFell, who played behind Naanee for most of last season, flashed big-play ability while leading the team in "catch rate" (64.3 percent) and averaging 17 yards per reception.

Don't think some people comprehend this. Poor DT play, played into troubles across the D-line.
