Fa An Indicator Of The Upcoming Draft?

With the way the league has moved toward a "passing" league, you can look at free agency to get an idea of where the value lies. WR's and CB's went extremely fast and got top dollar as opposed to other positions.

This would also indicate that folks like WR's and CB's will get picked a bit above their "true" value. Sort of like QB's.

M Floyd is moving up draft boards and so is Stephen Gilmore.

I look for both to go above the 12-20 pick grades that a lot are giving them.

I think the Panthers could be picking Gilmore to stop the pass. Then pick up a DT in the second.

Panthers got beat in 4th qtr many times last year and it was not because someone ran the ball over us late in the game. Brees and Ryan twice, both Mannings, Rivers, Palmer.

We had better get better in coverage.

DE is something that will have to be more productive also, but Coples is hit or miss and nothing else is worth a first rounder in a 43 Defense.

Draft could definitely follow the example FA gave us

A Elite DE got paid more then any other position. Plus no Elite DT were on the market teams don't let good Dlinemen hit FA. They let WR and CB go all the time that should tell you something.

Teams typically don't let elite o-lineman or d-lineman go because there harder to find and much more valuable. A good draft would be

Cox

Trumaine Johnson

James Michael Johnson

We need a starter at DT, another quality corner, and depth at linebacker

That's what I was saying you can't use FA as a sign of how the league is going because elite Dlinmen or really good ones don't make it to FA. Teams sign them before they hit FA. Look at who gets the Franchise tag the most.

I'd say our biggest needs going into FA were defensive tackle, safety, linebacker and cornerback. We signed two safeties, a linebacker, re-signed Senn and restructured Davis. So I'd say if free agency is any indicator, we're definitely going either DT then CB or vice versa.

Had we not signed Nakamura and R. Smith, I'd still be all up on the trade down for Mark Barron bandwagon.

One player that has gotten NO play on this forum is Barron. He is ranked just outside the top 10 on many boards and is probably more than a full round better than the next safety. If we become the heavy blitz team that McDermitt must have been brought in for, we must have a "last line of defense" safety, which we don't have now. Barron could be that safety that Dawkins was for Philly and taking him a few spots to soon should not be considered a reach.

I think Barron could be the surprise pick that not a lot of people are thinking about or saw coming especially with the FA safety pick ups. Not saying it's probable, just saying it's possible. Barron doesn't seem to be getting a lot of press either. Which could be a good thing since guys like Kirkpatrick and Claiborne have both had something bad pop up(weed and low wonderlic respectively) where as Barron has been very under the radar yet high on draft boards.

True. But, if Cox and Gilmore are there, both are good, then would you not look at your weakest point?

2 3rds and another guy on DL plush a couple of guys who were getting better by years end make the DT position a bit less of a need than the CB position.

    • 100% even if rest of team is really talented if they march young out to be qb and he plays like he has for 90% of his starts the panthers have already lost doesnt even matter how good the rest of the team is or isnt and also makes it hard to even tell how good they are.  They need true competition for young this offseason.
    • It will be awesome to have an improved stadium to lose in I guess....   https://www.yahoo.com/news/panthers-file-rezoning-bank-america-111500840.html     The Carolina Panthers have taken another necessary step toward renovating their home of the present and future. Panthers Stadium, LLC, filed its rezoning site plan with the city of Charlotte on Monday, initiating an important — if mostly technical — step toward renovating Bank of America Stadium. The filings state that the rezoning relates “primarily to technical aspects associated with improvements to Bank of America Stadium,” and that the rezoning is required because “the current stadium zoning is out of date” for the team’s stadium renovation plans.   The planned stadium updates include new seats installed throughout the upper and lower bowls; stadium safety and security enhancements; a reimagined South Lawn Pavilion; upgraded restrooms; exterior enhancements (including LED video boards) and more. Planning for the stadium renovation project will continue through 2025, with construction starting in 2026 and the renovation’s conclusion in 2029, The Observer previously reported.
    • In my dream, we somehow luck into a top 2 pick and someone wants a QB bad and doesn’t want anyone else to jump them. Somehow we’ll probably screw up the picks anyway, but it would be nice to do even partially what Chicago did to us. We’d have to lose out, which is a decent possibility unless Tampa is resting. We need Atlanta to stay within a game because Atlanta beat Tampa twice. The rest of the draft slots are who knows because Jax plays the Raiders and then Tennessee and you never know who will rest starters. I think we are top 7 unless we somehow pull out 2 more wins. The 4 win teams have higher SOS and there is only one 5 win team with the same SOS. If we win 1 of 3, we still should stay in top 7. If we lose out and the Jax games work for us, we can easily be top 3.
