What's The Best Way To Get Money Out Of A Broken-Down Vehicle?

The 1996 ford ranger i've been driving for the last ten years died on the side of the road yesterday. it's been on its way out for a while now, so i kind of saw it coming, but still it sucks. i'm out of a vehicle and i have to figure out what to do with it.

anybody have experience with getting money for junked cars? do scrap yards normally offer decent prices or is it best to drop it off at an actual auto junkyard? what kind of money can i expect?

11 cents a pound there abouts if you haul it to them.

I've had good success with the Kidney Foundation and their process for donation. They make it pretty easy on you. The toughest part is getting the title transfer notarized.

To me, getting a few hundred bucks more by parting out/hauling the car yourself isn't worth the hassle.

99% sure it threw a rod.

it's been going downhill for a long time now. engine was running extremely rough for the last month, dying at random points, eating through oil like nobody's business. i had it taken in to the shop a month ago and they told me it could die any day. i had just filled it up with oil and was driving it home when something under the hood exploded with the energy of ten thousand burning suns and then i lost power steering and the throttle and it just drifted to the side of the road. it's done.

thanks for the advice everyone. there's actually a huge scrap metal yard a couple of miles up the road from my house, so i'll probably have someone tow it there and see if i can get a couple hundred bucks for it.

the good news is i've talked my wife into letting me get a motorcycle to ride instead :D
