Kirkpatrick Vs. Gilmore

Kirkpatrick is the better corner. Gilmore is all of the sudden being hyped up as the draft nears for no reason.

I remember I had us taking Gilmore in the 2nd of almost all of my mock drafts and a lot of users complained about him playing corner in the NFL. You see those same users jumping on his wagon all of the sudden now though.

The draft is fugging hilarious.

As this is probably stemming from the other thread, it poses a good question..... And it sure is a tough call. You have two great corners, which I think both will have good careers, and they both have pretty good measurables. It's a call that I don't think I'm qualified to make because I did not watch them both enough to know.... I would be happy with either.

There were some concerns about Dre because he got pulled over with some friends and had marijuana in the car. I watched an interview and he seems like a bright young man. A good guy but the world is full of good guys that like weed and it can mess up your life if you can't manage it.

That is pure hyperbole. Getting a ticket for MJ one time in college does not mean your a pot head.

Maybe I'm a little cynical. Most people that get hit with DUIs got away dozens of times before getting caught. That's just reality. People try drugs for the first time when they are in high school or freshman in college. No one is having their first experience with marijuana 2 months before the biggest moment of their professional careers.

Expert opinion on Gilmore and Kirkpatrick in Man, zone and ball skills. You can read the rest at the links at the bottom of my post.

Gilmore

Zone

: Fits best in a zone system like he currently plays. Knows his, and others', assignments on every play. Comes out initial read quickly to stop the underneath route dead. Quick feet in off coverage to adjust to inside routes, even when playing outside technique. Explodes to plays in front of him, cutting down his target or wrapping up if able to line up the receiver. Forces turnovers and dropped passes with his ability to arrive strong at the receiver with the ball.

Man

Plays mostly in press-bail or off-coverage. Flashes a tough, aggressive punch after the snap in rare press coverage occasions, but may not have the strength to knock NFL receivers off their routes. Not elite transitioning forward from backpedal, will take an extra step or loop a bit when closing on slants. Lacks elite recovery and straight-line speed to stay with faster wideouts down the field if beaten on a double move or losing a step off the line.

Ball skills

Makes quarterbacks pay for poor throws with centerfielder-like instincts and hands. Uses his height in full advantage on jump balls, make difficult catches with his hands extended away from his frame. Excellent elusiveness after the catch that shows as a punt returner.

Kirkpatrick

Zone

Mainly used in man, but flashes playmaking ability in zones, as well. Uses his size and length to close and wrap effectively after the catch. Reads quarterback when playing off, baits him to make the underneath throw then closes to make the interception or a big hit to dislodge ball from receiver. Uses length to knock away touch passes behind him and in front of the safety.

Man

Possesses prototypical size and strength combination to lock down NFL receivers on the outside. Long arms and attitude give him a chance to be very good in press role. Plays with natural bend and fair foot quickness in his backpedal. Hips are fluid for his size, opens them up quickly out of pedal to keep inside position while running down the sideline. Recovery speed from double-moves and pick plays is more than adequate, does not give much ground trailing on crossing routes. Can be overaggressive landing his punch in press, giving up inside position, losing his balance, or even falling down.

Ball Skills

Strong enough to win jump balls down the sideline or 50-50 balls over the middle. Good hand-eye coordination to knock away passes in front of receivers with off hand. Does not find the ball quickly when receiver turns to look, overruns plays too regularly. Gambles on interceptions instead of securing the tackle

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/prospectrankings/TSX/2012 That's from CBS and they've got them rated pretty closely on old information at 16th and 19th overall.

Kirkpatrick and Gilmore from draftcountdown, He's got Jenkings rated higher then both, but also says that Gilmore might be the most physically gifted CB in this draft class.

From http://www.draftcountdown.com/ScoutingReports/CB/Dre-Kirkpatrick.php

Krikpatrick

Strengths:

• Outstanding height with a rangy frame

• Displays solid instincts and football IQ

• Gets a great jam at line of scrimmage

• Is aggressive, tough and very physical

• Reliable tackler who will support the run

• Extremely confident with a short memory

• Also able to contribute on special teams

• Battle-tested against elite competition

Weaknesses:

• Average speed, quickness and explosion

• Lacks fluid hips to transition and run vertically

• Was never much of a playmaker in coverage

• Takes too many chances and will get burned

• Battled injuries and durability is a concern

• Some minor character and maturity issues

• May be a bit of a positional 'tweener in pros

http://www.draftcountdown.com/ScoutingReports/CB/Stephon-Gilmore.php

Gilmore

Strengths:

• Possesses prototypical height and bulk

• Smooth athlete w/ great speed and burst

• Has fluid hips and quick feet to transition

• Able to turn and run downfield vertically

• Is physical with the ability to jam at line

• Playmaker with nice hands and ball skills

• Physical tackler who will support the run

• Is very confident and has a short memory

• Mature with strong work ethic / intangibles

• Lots of experience against top competition

• Still developing and has considerable upside

Weaknesses:

• Appears to lack top instincts and awareness

• Must refine footwork and overall technique

• A tendency to get too tall in his backpedal

• Gives up too much of a cushion in off man

• Doesn't always play up to immense talent

I like Kirkpatrick. Ive heard repeatedly that he played a lot of man at Bama. I think he is also much more proven than Gilmore. I concur, if we stay at: Dre. Trade down: Gilmore.

How is Dre more proven than Gilmore, when Gilmore has twice as many tackles, ints, and has started all 40 of his career games? People only hype up Dre because he was surrounded by superior talent in his Alabama defense.

Dre if you want to play zone 95% of the time, though Gilmore is no slouch in that area, otherwise go with Gilmore.

Jenkins is the best Man to Man CB in this draft. Sucks he has so much baggage.

If he interviews well, the baggage won't matter. Cam had baggage and look at him now. I'd take Jenkins over Dre and Gilmore. I don't think that either one of them gives us anything more than who we have on the roster now.

You can't even compare Cam to Jenkins like that.

Cam had a carry on, Jenkins needs a plane to himself to carry all his baggage.

That wasn't a comparison of Cam to Jenkins. It was a relation of the fact that they both had baggage, although not identical, baggage none the less. Making a point that we too Cam with HIS baggage because he interviewed well. They saw something or multiple somethings that they felt they could harness. If they get the same vibe from Jenkins, we'd sign him.

Great thread and posts so far.

Both Dre and Gilmore are real options for us....people are discussing their strengths and weaknesses with well thought out arguments and facts...and we are on page 2 of the thread and there have been no insults thrown at each other.

Very refreshing and well done to those who have already posted. Keep up the fine work.
