Greg Cosell Drops Some Draft Knowledge On Twitter

Who is Greg Cosell?

Executive producer of NFL Matchup, Senior Producer NFL Films for 33 years, Co-author of The Games That Changed The Game

Highly recommend reading "What's at a Premium" where he goes through the most important positions in the NFL (QB, LT, DE/OLB, CB) http://nflfilms.nfl....s-at-a-premium/ and his WR column: http://nflfilms.nfl....transformation/

When I evaluate college players one of main things I think about is what can be coached + what can't. No one is a finished product.

Other point I try to remember watching college tape is a lot of guys contribute in NFL in different roles. Function of schemes + coaching.

Asked about Jenkins. Based solely on tape, believe he is best pure man cover corner in draft. Watched him at FL v. Green, J. Jones + Jeffery

And he brought up one of the most interesting points that I've read in a long time

Isn't it fascinating that players rise + fall this time of year? Why? Doesn't that really say more about the analyst than the player?

Rising + falling suggests analysts know what teams draft boards look like. They don't. So on what info are they basing those concepts?

Its a thing to keep in mind when reading these 'player stock' reports

And just for a heads up, he will be doing his first mock soon.

What I hope separates my mock from others will be the picks will be based on my evaluations. No one knows what any teams board looks like.

When I do my mock later this week it won't be a projection. It will be based on my film study. I don't guess what teams might do.

I will pick players based on my perception of team needs based on my extensive NFL tape study. I am not simply ranking players 1-32.

Ranking players 1-32 is a totally different exercise than drafting players. Positions are prioritized + teams draft accordingly.

I certainly will factor in many things when I do my mock. My point is I will choose based on my evaluation of players. You'll be surprised.

If you aren't following him on twitter, I highly suggest it.

Over/under to the first post dismissing Greg Cosell bc he did not jump up and down with Cam Newton, based on game tape last season.

he didn't jump up and down, but he was very articulate about the pros and cons of taking a guy like him #1, and he was very quick to say he was the real deal when he started putting good games on film.

I agree with you. It seems as if he didnt say he is the unquestionable no.1 pick he is a garbage analyst.

I like Greg Cosell.

Cosell seems to delve deep into tape and has some real good opinions but draft wise he is hit or miss and will tell you that himself.

I do like his break downs and last year with Cam Newton he was right what he saw on tape but wrong about what he was capable of.

The thing about Greg is all he has to go by is tape and he makes that clear. He never sat down with Cam. Never discussed playbooks or philosophy. He never sat down with Cam's coach and asked him what kind of kid Cam is. So it's kind of like looking through binoculars with a neck brace. You can see one thing very clearly from a distance but not the whole picture.

You do realize he is just going off of game film right? That is the only place he is looking to make his opinions. He isn't a coach looking to draft a player so why would he sit down with hundreds of guys to get a feel for what kind of person they are?
