Bobcats Rebrand Update Thread (Real Charlotte Fans-Censorship Free Edition)

We get the Hornets name back, and then there's something else the city of Charlotte doesn't like so they stop going to the games. I can see that coming a mile away. Hell, they already wanna turn on Michael now. A good portion of these people in here arguing on behalf of the Hornets don't like the NBA or NBA players anyway. When the Hornets still suck in 2-3 years, it'll be easy for them to jump off this fad.

A person earlier described it to a tee..."a bunch of spoiled brats". If we don't like an owner, we stop going to the games even though theres other bad owners out there, and their fans still show up. We had a chance to keep the Hornets, and the opportunity was blown...time to move on. In fact, Charlotte is probably better off without a NBA team. Charlotte fans, outside of KT and a pocket of loyal fans, pretty much suck. Been a bandwagon city for years

I am not sure what you are talking about. The vast majority of the people posting here either attend or root for the Bobcats. We have only won 7 games and are still 20th in attendance. Imagine if you added the excitement of it being the Hornets.

George Shinn is an entirely different animal than Bob Johnson. People quit going to Hornets games because Shinn was stealing our money and didn't want to contribute to building a new stadium or contribute to signing our best players.

Do you remember when the word from the Hornets was that we HAD to trade Alonzo Mourning in order to keep Larry Johnson long term because we couldn't afford them both. Then when Larry's contract started getting close to expiring the very next year to do we traded him for Anthony Mason.

Throw in the sex scandal and the promise to pay for 50% of the new stadium that he later reneged on and then tried to force Charlotte's hand by threatening to move the team if we didn't pay for his stadium... well that is why people quit giving him money. And it was justified in my opinion. At the end of the day owners answer to the fans.

As I have said before I had no problem with Bob Johnson and was excited when he was rewarded the team. But we need to re-energize a fan base before it is too late.

Yes if we had a championship caliber team fans would come out in droves. But that is easier said than done in a small market. In order to succeed you have to have a team that the fans can identify with. Right now the fans don't identify with the Bobcats.

And if the Bobcats did re-brand to the Hornets it would be the first time in a looong time that the franchise did something that made the very high majority of fans happy.

You may not think that makes a difference, but when fans feel like they are being heard and that ownership is trying to give the fans what they want, they will respond positively.

the bobcats are paying for the sins of the hornets and being held hostage by a jilted fanbase

its like comparing your girlfriend to your high school sweetheart and destroying the relationship internally

once some of you get old enough you'll realize you can't go home again

What if your high school sweetheart is knocking on you door beggin for you to take her back and you had always loved her?

Sure you could stay with your current wife, but you would never be happy.

You would end up drinking away the night and sneaking off to strip clubs after work to get a hummer from a stripper that weighs 280 pound and has a cyst on her neck.

It's comical that a discussion on the nickname of a basketball team has 2 posters turning it into anything related to race.

Who gives a fug what George Shinn did for the community?

Who gives a fug what Bob Johnson did for the community?

Neither of the guys are actively involved in running either team ( I understand that Bob still owns a piece of the team)

Who gives a fug what the race of anyone is? We are talking about Bobcats and Hornets and I'm not sure of the race of either of those species.

The only things that needs to be debated are:

Will rebranding the Charlotte Bobcats into the Charlotte Hornets create enough incremental profits to offset the capital/ opportunity costs associated with rebranding?

Will rebranding iincrease the long term viability of the team here in Charlotte? (through Increased attendance, merchandise sales, etc)

If so, MJ will make it happen.

If not, he won't.

Who knew?

Thought MJ might consider a possible re brand that would excite the locals, increase community support, and drive increased revenue to the bottom line.

These things would help the team thrive, provide a sound justification for MJ to retain ownership and ensure Charlotte kept an NBA team in town.

Little did I know that my true subconscious motivations would be revealed to me by forum residents with an opposing view point and mind-reading superpowers!

I get it, we don't all agree on the re brand of the team. I am glad we don't, it makes for an interesting debate.

However, there is no need to associate evil thoughts with those that you don't happen to agree with on this issue.

When in doubt, bring racism into the argument!

I love how if you say anything negative against Bob Johnson you are automatically a racist. If you think Bob Johnson was a great owner then clearly you are just like all of the Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson clones out there who irrationally stick by your own, no matter how stacked the facts are against you. Just like all the people who knew for a fact that the Duke lacrosse players raped that girl? How did that turn out? Just like all the ones who know unequivocally that Zimmerman hunted down Trayvon and shot him in cold blood. Now, as more information trickles out, it doesn't seem so much that that is the case.

How miserable is life for you if all you can do is see race and try to pull racism into almost every argument you have? Must be terrible to try and turn every slight, or every comment into an attack on your race. Guess what, not as many people as you think dislike black people. Try getting over it for a change.

This is a pretty great summary of why Bob Johnson was a terrible owner written by Tom Sorenson:

Johnson, who sold the Charlotte Bobcats to Jordan, made some typically absurd comments Saturday after accepting an award from the Urban Leadership Institute. The comments were typically absurd because they revolve around a central theme. The theme is that Charlotte again failed him.

“Charlotte is a very, how would I call it, close-knit, arrogant, sometimes incestuous town,” Johnson said.

He added: “If you come to this town, and you look like you’re one of those people that might break some glass ... it’s going to be tough for them to relate to.”

Johnson was tough to relate to. He expected our accolades and our dollars simply because he was here.

Johnson is the worst owner of any team, major league, minor league or fantasy, the city has ever had. How much money and time did he give to charity? How many hands did he shake? How many of his own games did he attend?

If Johnson wanted us to support him, he was obligated to support us. Every city has a way of doing business, and he was never curious enough to learn ours.

Or did he think changing his name from Robert to Bob was sufficient?

Do you remember the comments Johnson made in a meeting with the Observer not quite two years ago? He criticized the business community for a lack of support.

I wrote a column that advocated the obvious. “Hey, Bob, thanks for coming. Now go.”

At that time, Johnson’s team was bad and boring. They’re pretty good now, and Johnson gets credit.

But what else did he accomplish?

When Johnson talked to the Urban Leadership Institute about breaking glass, and said, “it’s going to be tough for them to relate to,” was he implying there was a racial component to his failure?

Of course there are people who refused to support him because he’s black.

Most of us wanted to support Johnson. But his legacy of greedy, ego-driven mistakes pushed us away. We weren’t obligated to back his team. He was obligated to at least pretend that the team also was ours.
