so not only does the anti-censorship in the title only apply to hornet fluffers, now any opposition discussion is considered derailing

When you say team names are stupid, your basically saying that Benson in New Orleans is stupid too. In fact, I'd argue that he is a smart business owner who sees that the city can't identify with the "Hornets" and wants it gone for something more fitting. If a name is just a name, I'm sure Benson will go with the "New Orleans Nadders",because who cares, right? Nope, I bet you he goes with something like the New Orleans Blues, the New Orleans Hurricanes or if he gets really lucky, the New Orleans Jazz, because tradition means SOMETHING.

Team names do matter a lot. Teams looking to find that perfect name spend a lot of money doing research, conducting polls, asking people to take surveys.... all to figure out what team name people want. Any marketing expert will tell you the value in having a GOOD team name. It's because owners want fans to identify with their team.

Bob Johnson, race aside, was simply terrible at marketing. After he ran his "Help Name The Team" campaign, he narrowed his choices down to 3:

Charlotte Bobcats

C

harlotte Dragons

Charlotte Flight

Does anybody know he decided that these would be the FINAL three of the bunch? I mean, he to like well over 1,000 suggestions (probably mostly bee references like the Charlotte Swarm! haha), but still... somehow he ended up with bobcats, dragons and flight. Now, let's assume for a minute that I'm Mr. Johnson and these three choices land on my desk. His team plays in Charlotte, and this is Charlotte's team. So let's find a name that represents Charlotte. It makes sense, right? I know Benson knows what I'm talking about! :)

Anyway, the worst choice of the three was clearly the Dragons. Not sure who came up with this? Maybe they were thinking of the Charlotte Knights and got the wrong impression about its meaning? I don't get the name dragons at all. I think Bob made up these 3 choices and put Dragons in there, because it made the Bobcats look better. haha It's really just awful! I won't even debate why the dragons wasn't it. Obviously, the most logical choice is the Flight. Of course, Flight doesn't relate 100% to Charlotte but North Carolina was first in flight, right? It's something. It's a start. Still, the WORST choice here - aside from the Dragons - is the Bobcats! It's also easy to argue that Bob wanted to name the team after himself or wanted a name so generic that if he had to move the team, it was flexible in any city. There is no reason why you would pick the least area-friendly name from a marketing perfective. You literally have to not care ONE bit about marketing to let a name like the Bobcats slide through.

The sad thing is that Bobcats didn't even win the vote (i think the flight did) and it still ended up being the name.

I do think that hurt them from the start. We had just had an NBA owner that many felt snubbed the fans for his own egomaniacal reasons and here is a new owner that immediately undermines the fans once again to name the team after himself.

It didn't sit well with many fans.

Hey PanthAZ, I like how your international HORNETS website has a bunch of NOLA Hornets fans clowning the Charlotte Hornet nostalgists. HA! Telling you guys you'll never get your name back and how the Hornets belong to NO. How your revolutionary history means jack. LMAO. Like I said man, yall look bad. And its never gonna happen. Bobcats will be here longer than you will.

Really?!?!

This could not be further from the truth. I respect (and appreciate) the current fans of the Bobcats. I don't trash things that I don't truly believe need to be reevaluated. I truly believe the Bobcats are a product of mismanagement and overall laziness. Bob Johnson brought an NBA team back to Charlotte, yes. But he did so in a way where he seemed to think the pre-established NBA fandom in Charlotte would just do all the work for him. He refused to listen to people's opinions for names (I'm not even talking about the Hornets name), and he overall did not make many (if any) decisions that benefited Charlotte or our Franchise.

For the second part of your statement, you again could not be further from the truth. Yes we want the Hornets name, because it has an already established brand recognition.... But don't believe for 1 second that I, and probably most of these people, wouldn't settle for a re branding to anything really.

What we're dealing with now is a Brand that's reputation is so tarnished with negative feelings and stuck in the gutter, that it really seems logical to start anew. I love Charlotte. I Love the Carolinas. But this Bobcats brand was a failure.

This is all my opinion. If you disagree with everything I've said, or just part of it, please feel free to offer your opinion and your stance on the current state of OUR franchise.

But please don't just turn to blind insults and conversation killing assumptions of another person's thoughts. THat just makes you, and more importantly our fanbase and community look bad.
