Stephon Gilmore A True Option

How did Gilmore go from our possible 2nd round pick to our possible top ten pick?

I'm not being sarcastic, because I don't follow college ball (I live in San Diego...) so can someone enlighten me on why he has so rapidly shot up the draft boards?

This is a concern of mine as well.

I dont follow the SEC but using logic, id say he didnt dominate on the field like a elite CB should / would therefore he was considered a 2nd round pick.

After the combine and him putting up really good numbers to compliment his size is what triggered all the love / hype.

Gilmore at 9 is a reach. The kid has good size and speed, but his tackling mechanics are piss-poor. He tries hard to make good tackles, but often just ends up looking like a spaz and missing. Shifty receivers will be able to break away from him with relative ease. He stays in his back peddle waaaaay too long as well. He is physical and can push, but he doesn't react well. I am not a fan.

not sure that can be considered using logic

He moved up from the second round after more people saw him at the combine, saw his athletic ability was there...His game tape has been good all along, I guess he just wasn't getting the press he deserved.... From what I'm reading, him at 10 would not be a reach, and apparent most scouts have him over Dre Kirkpatrick. And it fills a need. I like it because he seems like a safe pick that fills a need.

Can someone explain to me why they don't want Poe but want Gilmore?

Gilmore wasn't even that good on the field, poor technician, and extremely stiff hips. He's better off at safety than cornerback. The only reason anybody is talking about him is because of his athleticism. Which is nice. But doesn't make him much different than Poe.

best case scenario, he's our #2 corner. worst case scenario, he's our new starting FS in place of martin...

i ain't even mad.

I'm not big on where I think a guy should or should not be drafted in relation to everyone else in every other position. If you think he's your guy, then you take him. If they had a re-draft don't you think guys like brees or Beason or tom brady would go higher? damn straight they would.

If we like him, I have no problem with drafting him at 9.

plus there's that whole rookie wage scale that makes drafting anyone even less of a risk nowadays.

That isn't the worst case scenario. The only reason people are hyping him as much as they are is because of his combine. Everybody wants to trash Poe because of his game film but not Gilmore. Gilmore is a 2nd round prospect on tape with tremendous upside. But he has serious issues when it comes to footwork, has very stiff hips (which is BAD for a corner), and isn't an ideal fit for a defense that runs more man than it does zone.

I wouldn't be mad if they took him. I trust the Carolina FO. I'm merely just asking this site why they like him but not Poe. I don't see much of a difference. Both blew up the combine, both have lackluster game film (moreso for Poe than Gilmore though).

you are probably right, him being our FS is probably the best, worst case scenario, and i see what you are saying in regards to poe. The difference is that gilmore has actually had some good games whereas poe was pretty non existent until the combine. I know that's what you are basically arguing against gilmore with, but poe really has some "bad" tape, and from what i have seen, gilmore just has "meh" tape.

either way, whoever we think is our guy, I will welcome him onto the team with open arms.

All i know is half this board doesnt know what the hell they are talking about. Remember those discussions this time last year and how soooo many Huddlers felt Cam didn't need to come off the board with that #1 pick??? Im not concerned who goes at 9. Im sure they'll be a great fit for the team.
