Early Look At The Roster

Recommended Posts

:cheers2:

Thanks for clarifying some of the reasoning for your original post. We have different opinions but hell, thats going to happen during the pre-season.

Just one quick question...why do you think moving Brayton to DT would make the line worse? I said this before on here and many have slammed me for it but no one really gives me a reason. Could you explain why you think that would make the d-line worse? Maybe my opinion of Brayton is just too high or something, I'm not sure.

Brayton is too light and not skilled enough to be a full time DT. The only time he should be put there is on passing downs, just like we did this past season or MAYBE due to injury because Hayden looked poor last year when he got a shot to play and its uncertain how well Irvin will be.

I know it is very early to be looking at the 53 man roster, but after an EXCELLENT draft it looks like the roster is pretty much done. I see us going out and signing Robertson and a free agent o-linemen. This looks like a very competitive roster and I am real excited. I also think the last roster spot is going to come down to McCown, an extra o-linemen, or FA linebacker

QB: Jake Delhomme and Matt Moore

RB: DeAngelo Williams, Jonathan Stewart, and Mike Goodson

FB: Brad Hoover and Tony Fiammetta

WR: Steve Smith, Mushin Muhammad, Dwayne Jarrett, Ryne Robinson, and Jason Carter

TE: Jeff King, Dante Rosario, and Gary Barnidge

OL: Jordan Gross, Travelle Wharton, Ryan Kalil, Keydrick Vincent, Jeff Otah, Duke Robinson, Mackenzy Bernadeau, Geoff Schwartz, and FA

DE: Julius Peppers, Everette Brown, Charles Johnson, Hilee Taylor

DT: Maake Kemoeatu, Dewayne Robertson, Damione Lewis, and Nick Hayden

DE/DT: Tyler Brayton

LB: Thomas Davis, Jon Beason, Nail Diggs, James Anderson, Dan Connor, and Landon Johnson

CB: Chris Gamble, Richard Marshall, Sharrod Martin, CJ Wilson, and Dante Wesley

S: Chris Harris, Charles Godfrey, Quinton Teal, and Nate Salley

K: John Kasay and Rhys Lloyd

P: Jason Baker

LS: JJ Jansen

You forgot Irvin dude.

The weight is a concern but the skill set I think is there. At first I thought he was about the same weight as Carstens was but when I looked it up Carstens came in around 300#s while Brayton is only 280#s.

However, Meeks has had success with lighter DT's in Indy. The most success he had was when that lighter DT was lined up beside of McFarlan who is about the same weight as Kemo.

For me, Lewis just isn't the same as he was when he came in on rotation for Kemo. I think the team needs to find a way to upgrade that DT spot in order to maximize both Kemo and Lewis. And I don't think Robertson is the answer.

I say Irvin sticks a year on practice squad. He seems too raw and somewhat of a project. Honestly the only pick of the last 2 years I did not like. But hey that is why I am not in the war room.

Well DT is a need pick and I think once the Bears picked Gilbert they had to get the best one available and according to them that's Irvin. I think he'll at least see the field on rotation a head of Hayden.

Just a few random thoughts after reading your posts.

I'm pretty sure that Irvin will make the team. This year is the defensive version of last year. We identified a main need and we overload on it. They'll do what they can to make sure that our Dline is better than what it was last year, so he'll stay for positional need. I can't remember a 3rd round pick on our squad ever not making the main team, even if it's as a backup.

Captain Munnerlyn despite having an epic name will not make the team, nor will both Teal and Wilson. We drafted Martin over pure corners like Sean Smith largely because of his versatility in both safety and corner. Therefore he can be a safety net for both positions. We don't need to keep 4 guys purely for the safety position.

In a similar way to the point above, I don't think we NEED 5 WR's. We can keep 4 and have Goodson as the last receiver. Of course, we can still keep 5 of them if we think they're too good to cut but we have flexibility.

I think we'll go into the season with 3 QB's. If we don't think Jake is the guy, shouldn't we keep a few options? McCown, Moore and Delhomme all have the ability to start in the NFL. We ran into trouble with QB depth before, I think we've learned our lesson.
