Jonathan Martin To Slide On Draft Day?

Recommended Posts

Here's another player where all you hear about him is that he is a first round draft pick, and now everyone is suggesting that he is being overdrafted and he is not even coming to the NFL Draft because he does not think he will be taken in the first.

I wonder how necessary someone on the offensive line is for us. While we all absolutely foam at the mouth for defensive talent, we did let a few offensive linemen walk but our offense was fine without them. There were a lot of times, though, where you could see the pocket crush Cam before he had a chance to go through his reads, and that's where a lot of the throwing mistakes came from.

The other side of the argument is that Cam has the ability to move in the pocket and escape the pressure with his legs. I never think of Michael Vick or The Golden Calf of Bristol having needed offensive linemen because they always had the threat of booking it for yards against a team. While Newton definitely doesn't have the same skillset as Michael Vick (power vs speed, arm and accuracy differences), I think Cam can do with just a mediocre line.

That same mediocre line with Ryan Kalil and Jordan Gross on it (with Otah coming back).

So, do we spend a second round pick on Jonathan Martin if he falls? He seems like a good talent, but I am in the club of desperately wanting a #2 CB or DT.

OT Jonathan Martin-Stanford

Height: 6’6

Weight: 305 lbs.

Projection: Top 15

Grade: 7.5

Strengths:

Tall OT prospect who is has a great frame and room to get even bigger…has the ability to stay light on his feet and stay out in front of speed rushers…sinks his hips wells and anchors down on the bull rush…keeps his hands up and protects his chest plate well from defenders who are good with their hands…he’s a natural knee bender…athletic and agile enough to get outside in front of screen passes or sweep plays…does a good job coming down the line for a crack back block…moves his feet well and got good depth on his kick step in the Fiesta Bowl.

Weaknesses:

Was inconsistent with his footwork during the season, against Oregon he struggled with the speed rush of Kaddu and Jordan but against Oklahoma State he wasn’t beat once…needs to bulk up some, listed at 305 but looks even lighter on the field…questions exist about his arm length…needs to work on extending his arms once engaged and maintaining control…would like to see him develop his punch and use it to neutralize DE’s rush…must continue to show up like he did in the Fiesta Bowl and avoid the ‘heavy feet’ label

The line there about him looking lighter can be easily confused. How he looks is irrelevant, how many downs does he have the endurance and ability to play at a high level is what we want to know. I dont care if he looks like he should be wearing clown shoes if he can stop Jarod Allen.

well I mind a little bit if he looks like he should be wearing clown shoes. . but not a lot
