Why Are We So Bad With Our 2Nd Round Picks?

Well there should be no reason or excuse why we should bust on this years 2nd.We are picking high and the depth and quality should be there at several positions. My only concern is if we dont go cb in the 1st will the talent be there in the 2nd.

So what happens if we somehow got Claiborne in the 1st, and Janoris Jenkins is available when we pick in the 2nd? Do we still go BPA?

BPA should be BPAWN or Best Pick Available within need. If we have a CB we will evaluate our needs and pick the best player from that bunch. Its how you get Jon Beason but its also how you get Jarrett. Also as RnR said poor scouting is the problem as well if your not picking the best player.

The average bust rate is 50% in the 2nd round in the NFL while ours is about 80% unless you want to include Marshall and Martin as a success then we are about average..My guess is we have deviated from the BPA and drafted for a need.I have also linked a study that is a bit outdated but still relevant.Who in this years 2nd round is a sure thing and should we draft them?

:Armanti Edwards (2011)

Jimmy Clausen (2010)

Ryan Kalil

Sherrod Martin (2009)

packed in a deal to get Jeff Otah (2008)

Dwayne Jarrett (2007)

Richard Marshall (2006)

Eric Shelton (2005)

Keary Colbert (2004)

Bruce Nelson (2003)

DeShaun Foster (2002)

I think maybe its by taking BPA, but that probably happened only once with the Clausen pick. But, i believe most of the time, it's just bad scouting and drafting. Especially, by trying to draft a player and changing his position. If you need a cb, take a cb and dont take a safety. Duh

-For example, we took Clausen bc he fell. If he never did, we would've probably took Cody.

-We took Brown over Kruger.

-Martin over Sean Smith. (safety to corner back to safety)

-Took Edwards over a player I wanted, Geno Atkins. ( QB to WR ) If you want a WR/Returner, should've took a Mike Williams, Jacoby Ford or Gilyard.

-Shelton over Gore

I'm hoping we don't fawk up this year.

Otah was a first round pick. Hard to blame hurney for a players injuries. Easy for you though.

Actually I wouldn't call Otah a bust. The list in the op was of all the 2nd round picks under Hurney and it included A Edwards who was a 3rd round pick but used a future 2nd to get him. Otah was a 1st rounder that was drafted by using the 2nd round pick in 2008. So if you include Edwards then you have to also include Otah IMO.
