Your Top 5 Songwriters Of All Time (And Their Best Song)

Look, the Avett's are good songwriters, but we're talking top 5 of all time. What are you, 10 years old?

Reading the actual post will do wonders.

And in regards to your list, not sure how you list Howlin Wolf when Willie Dixon wrote a good amount of his songs. As a vocalist he is up there. This is about songwriting.

And Robert Johnson for that matter. Robert Johnson is a pioneer, but I'm sure many if not all of his songs are borrowed from bluesmen that came before him.

He clearly stated it was songwriters that influenced him for the past ten years. I don't care for the Avett Brothers, but stop being an idiot.

Guy who posts top 5 of the last 10 years in a top 5 of all time thread= cool

guy who expected posts about top 5 of all time= idiot

huddle logic

If you knew me better you'd know about my dislike for the Avett's, but I rarely get to post anymore thanks to an incredibly busy job I was promoted to last year.

Maybe I'll make a point to post more so you can all benefit from my idiocy and lack of reading comprehension.

I strive to make the world around me a better place.

Since this thread has turned to poo, I'll ask because I'm legitimately curious: did Scott Avett fug your girlfriend or something? I get not being into them, but to despise them so much there must be something else.

It's mostly a joke anymore, but for a time there I was simply jealous that the stunt they pulled actually worked.

They used to be a metal band that struggled to make gas money at gigs like the rest of the charlotte musicians. Then simply as a gimmick they started playing the music that they are famous for now. It took off so they embraced it and never looked back, and I can't blame them for that. Neither they or their manager would ever admit it today, nor should they.

When it bothered me I wasn't very successful with my musical endeavors, but now I'm in 3 moderately successful bands and I'm happy with that. More power to the Avett's.

There music just never hit a chord with me. I have a lot of friends that love them. But if i'm listening to that kind of music I would rather play Lucero. And I've seen there Gap posters on bus stops which was just ridiculous. But like i said i don't hate them, just don't care for them.

I'm not going to list who I think are the top 5 of all time, but instead the top five who have influenced me the past 10 or so years. Top five of all time would probably include the standards Dylan, Lennon/McCartney etc.

1) North Carolina Heros Scott and Seth Avett:

one of my favorite songs. He wrote this when he was 20. I don't care who you are, that's impressive. He will definitely go down as one of the greatest of all time. I have no doubt. He writes masterpieces constantly. Whether he records them or not.

When they Avett brothers were Nemo, they weren't trying to go places with it. Right before they added Bob Crawford, they decided they wanted to try a different style of music to go back to their roots. They never had any intentions on trying to get big. Scott was content running his art gallery in Concord and Seth had his own stuff going on as well. But Bob Crawford thought it would be a good idea to start playing some shows around North Carolina. So they took their little white Ford Taurus wagon around. They took off quite quickly. They've always loved old time country music and it is what they grew up on. It's not a gimmick. It's what they wanted to do. I know them personally as I have lived right down the road from their farm just off of Miami Church Road my entire life, been to their farm several times, and been to hundreds of their shows. I also know their manager Dolph Ramseur and his wife Dana very well. I know every single detail about the Avetts and your statement is false. Also, Nemo was not a metal band. Neither was Oh What a Nightmare.

That's interesting. I've never heard of their their early acoustic stuff referred to as a gimmick, but I could see some heavy metal scene kids thinking it was. I have to say I own their first Nemo album and it really isn't that great. The "Oh What a Nightmare" side project is much better, because the brother's songwriting and melodies are much stronger.

Congrats on your bands' moderate success. Playing music is awesome, but to get paid for it is even more incredible.

Yeah I get that. They seem to click with certain people, and when they click it's like Holy Crap where did these guys come from. I got into them in 2008, and after going back and listening to their old stuff realized they didn't have one single bad song. Even Led Zeppelin had songs I skip over, but who are these kids from right down the road writing these amazing albums? Since they have gotten older, they have changed. With wives and kids, you can't be selfish and do whatever you want. Their business decisions and music reflect that (Gap ads, setlists etc.). I feel I'm rambling. But yeah even if you don't like their music, there could not be better representatives for the State of NC than those two.

Well that's not what I heard Dolph Ramseur tell me and another musician friend of mine one night. I must have been drunk and stoned or something though.

I lose the internet today, oh well.

I fall back on what I said in an earlier post, more power to the Avett's, I'm really am glad to see someone from this area succeed. It's good for all musicians in the area.
