New Deal For Steve Smith

A lot of information says that rookies do count against the cap (which would make sense since they are players on the team under contract).

From http://www.askthecommish.com/salarycap/faq.asp

Who falls under the Salary Cap?

Answer: The "Team Salary" falls under the Salary Cap. Team salary includes the amount a team must pay its current or former players under their player contracts. Notice emphasis on the word PLAYERS. The salary cap does not apply to coaches, assistants, trainers, and other personnel. Only the top 51 player salaries for a team count against the salary cap in the offseason. (Outstanding tenders apply.) During the season, all player salaries count toward the salary cap. Question 1.5 How does the NFL Draft impact the Salary Cap?

Answer: Team salary includes the Rookie Minimum Active Salary as of the day of the draft for all drafted rookies. The salary for drafted rookies will stay at this amount until the player is signed, the team’s rights are relinquished through waivers, or until the Tuesday following the tenth week of the regular season if the player remains unsigned. Note also that there is a Rookie Salary Cap, which is a subset of the overall cap. Each team has its own unique Rookie Salary Cap, based on the number of draft picks they have and where in each round the picks ocurred.

This was updated after the new CBA was signed. I'm no salary cap expert so if this isn't correct then by all means show me where the correct information is, but the information I'm finding is that rookie salaries count if they fall in the top 51 salaries on your team.

This is so awesome.

Possibly my favorite Panther of all-time despite the one awkward meeting I had with him, lol.

So happy we got him locked in until retirement... Just read Sorenson's piece on it, I knew it was rumored that he wanted a trade but I didn't think we actually tried to trade him (which we did and weren't able to pull off because we weren't getting enough back).

So glad it all worked out...

This is the key part...the rookie cap is separate from the other salaries. I remember when it was reported that Newton was offered more money, but it would have been taken from the other rookies. Basically each player has a dollar amount associated with their draft position, and when all the pick values are added up the teams can distribute the money however they want. Frankly, I don't understand why they don't just make it so guys get paid according to draft position, instead of a separate cap for all of them.

So you guys that are only going to be happy once the numbers are released are going to be pissed if Hurney overpaid? fug that noise. To put my mind at ease that I'm not gonna have to go through with Smitty what I went through when Pep left is worth a billion of JR's dollars.

The only question now is what pose will he be doing for his statue? I vote x clown.

That would be cool, but I'd like something that was more reflective of the good times like...

A double statue with Smitty and Ken Lucas. Ken Lucas sitting on one knee and, well, you know the rest...

OR

Smitty changing the ball's diaper.

Those would be awesome statues.

Right but the money rookies are paid still contributes to your overall team salary cap according to that information and everything else I've looked at from my google search. It even says all drafted players count the rookie minimum to the salary cap until their either signed, released, or their rights are forfeited. So my understanding of this information is that rookie salaries do count against the cap...

So if Hurney overpays yet another player....it won't bother you? I am happy with Smitty...doesn't mean Hurney can pay him whatever and it be a smart move.

Smith needed to be extended....but overpaying everyone will have it's consequences/negatives for this team (and already has)

Not if said player is Steve Smith, wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

I guess technically it does count...but every team has a unique number based on the picks, so it's not like rookie picks would restrict us. Throwing arbitrary numbers out there: but say the cap was 120 million and we drafted guys totaling another 20 million and say, the Eagles, drafted guys worth 30 million. Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but it seems as though we'd have 140 million and the Eagles would have 150, but we would both only have the 120 to spend on other players (non-rookies). Not sure what to make of the rookie minimum part though, don't know if that's against the rookie cap or the overall cap.

    • Hope Koch recovers (he’s stated numerous times he doesn’t like to be called “koochie”) soon. But he does not instill confidence in the crease. I don’t have any confidence in any of our goalies, healthy or not. Andersen when available gives us the best chance to win but he’s never available.    Team has to explore trade options soon.
    • Respectfully, I completely disagree. Last year we were:  32nd in Sacks. 32nd in Turnovers.  32nd in Rushing TDs allowed  29th in Scoring.  We were absolutely atrocious on defense last year and that was with a full stable of weapons in Derek Brown, Frankie Luvu and Brian Burns that played all 17 games.  Using yards per game as a metric to guage our success lacks the context that because our offense was so inept teams were not driving the length of the field, they were starting at their 40-50 yard line.  This year, our Defense ranks:  31st in Sacks. Tied for 19th in Turnovers  31st in Rushing TDs allowed 32nd in Scoring  His defense fails to get pressure, fails to turn the ball over and fails to stop the run. Three things you absolutely have to do to be successful in the NFL.  Denver meanwhile has not missed a beat without him.  If another team wants to hire him as a HC and the Panthers get two 3rds for it I'll wish him the best and pack his bags myself.
