Pff's Panthers 3-Year Draft/player Assessment

Man Strength

This is the problem with fans. You will essentially remember the big plays, highlight plays or plays that go wrong. What's in between these are what fans won't remember. Their grading doesn't ignore or marginalise these plays.

Godfrey is not a good player and other than the occassional big hit near the LoS, he's pretty woeful at tackling. In contrast Munnerlyn was a 7th round pick whose had great success in the slot and had an average season as a starter. Not bad value for money there...

You are correct... I did not know we got Captain in the 7th. Thats like being the last kid picked in gym class though, and then we give him the #2 CB position??? Is it cause Marchall left and Captain is all we had? it seems obvious not to put a 7th round CB in a starting lineup defending against Matty Ice, n Brees, we even got swept by the Bucs 2 years ago.

To be fair to him he looked great in the slot and as we weren't able to upgrade the #2 CB slot, he got his shot at starting. He wasn't horrible, but he struggled enough for all to see he needs competition at least. Regardless, most teams don't even get guys who can suit up in the 7th or remain on the roster. We actually got one good season and one full season starting from him.

To Munnerlyns credit, that guy is going to compete as hard as he can.

EDIT - One concerning aspect about this report is that of the players they considered solid contributors, only Munnerlyn might remain byond this season...

Perhaps not a case for poor drafting, but extending the wrong ones? Hurney has made these mistakes in the past...

Gettis had a horrid first year? I dont remember it that way.

Thanks for the link though. Interesting read.

You remember 4 passes to him. 3 he caught for TDs. LaFell overall looked better in terms of a compleye player IMO that year......just can't teach speed.

Yea I guess as a 6th round pick I wasn't expecting anything from him so those few catches stood out. Especially with Pickles at QB. I still don't think I would call Gettis' first year as 'horrid' though.

I wouldn't call it that either. I think some put too much focus on 4 pass to him though....made them forget about the rest

Agreed. I'm hopeful he can become a good player but banking on him to become a starter based on the little we've seen would be a mistake.

PFF is hit and miss with me sometimes their good sometimes I don't know what game they were watching. Like when they thought Fua Played better then Mcclain. What game were they watching?

McClain seemed to pick it up at the end some....but I think Rivera hinted at him struggling more early than Fua. Who knows....I got lost the suckage and didn't watch them after a while.

Even these guys are high on Gary Barnidge? They must be high on something. What exactly do they see? Which stat sheet are they looking at? Did they grade these players by reading the huddle? You would think drafting a pass-catching tight end that doesn't catch balls would be a bad thing.

Saying Gettis had a "horrid" first year is unnecessarily harsh and false. How exactly does a worthless tight end drafted in the 5th round get a higher grade than a 6th round wide receiver who's actually had some production? poo article is poo. They can take their "calculated" opinions and shove it.

The coaching staff is high on Barnidge too...
