i've actually wanted Floyd for a while now... since before the combine/pro day's. i liked him better than any of the defensive prospects that looked to be available and still do now that the combine has happened and Poe and Kuechly have been thrown into the mix

now that Floyd has gotten some love from others, i figured i'd throw something together to give people an idea of what it could look like (imo, anyway) if we were to take him at 9

i agree. it's the only thing i really feel that's missing myself. thought about throwing something in at a later round, but see better potential in the players listed. OL is definitely the only thing I feel that could be beefed up through the draft that I didn't include.

An argument FOR taking Floyd with the #9 pick--

We upgrade 2 positions and solidify a key position (#1 WR) for 10 years. In the slot, Steve Smith's size is not an issue. He can motion and his blocking is perhaps a bigger factor. He is good over the middle and would face nickelbacks instead of #1 CBs. He would be better than Welker. Reducing the # of plays for SS would help him prolong his career (played 93% of snaps in 2011).

Now our #1 WR is 6'3" 220. We would be losing no speed (4.45) and getting a good blocking WR. He has very good hands and is a bigger target. With Smith in the slot and Lafell or Gettis in the mix, it is unlikely Floyd would face the double teams Smith faced.

It makes sense that Smith would prosper and Floyd would face single coverage. Gettis and Lafell would face #2 CBs, Throw in the receiving talents of Olson and Tolbert, Cam just got a lot better.

Argument for not drafting Defense first overall:

CB: Hogan is good enough to start. He was solid during his time on the field at the end of 2011.

DT: We had 4 first-year DTs play last year and we improved down the stretch. Let young talent develop before overhauling the position. Besides, Edwards, a seasoned veteran, is joining the front 4.

DE: CJohnson came around in year 3. Hardy is entering year 3. Keiser had 4 sacks in a very few snaps--was projected to be a possible first round pick in this year's draft had he stayed in school. Applewhite showed signs of converting into a pass rusher in a 4-3 Again, let the youth develop.

LB: We have 3 starters returning, we simply need quality depth. A versatile LB would be ideal--Bobby Wagner, DeMario Davis, for example.

S: Addressed in free agency.

(not that I agree with this, but we do not know how the panthers are looking at positions)

That's a bunch of crap. Same thing could be said at WR being a wasted pick in the 1st or 2nd round. At least Lafell look better playing his position then any DT we had last year.

I know you want a shiny new toy for Cam but don't down grade our serious need for more Playmakers on the Defensive side of the ball.

I got the best reason why we shouldn't draft Offense with the 1st 2-3 picks we make this year.

1. We didn't lose any game because of our 5th rated Offense.

hate to have to break this one out again so soon, but...

even with the new CBA and rookie contract structuring... i don't want to reach at the #9 spot for a DT. Cox is the closest thing to a 'sure thing' imo, and he'll even need to bulk up a bit to not be tossed aside by NFL O-lineman. everybody else is either hyped up beyong belief or someone who's going to be worked into our already young rotation. if i'm picking at #9, i want someone who's going to come in and make an immediate impact.

lets let your young guys CONTINUE to grow instead of grabbing someone who we'll immediately want in front of those guys on the depth chart... only to find out 6 games in we're in the EXACT same spot we were last season and at the same time stunted the growth of guys we brought in last year

I can say the same thing for our wr. Let them grow atleast they had some impact which is more then I can say for our dt's. Cox has a better chance of coming in and starting over our dt. Then any wr has of taking the job from lafell or gettis.
