Nfl.com Analyst Jason Smith Ranks Cam Newton As The Seventh Best Quarterback In The League

Ahead of him are Eli Manning, Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisberger, Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, and Peyton Manning.

He beats out Phillip Rivers, Matt Ryan, Michael Vick, Matthew Stafford, Tony Romo, Matt Schaub, Jay Cutler, and, shockingly, Matt Moore!

7) Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers: It's a small sample size, but I also knew I liked Ben & Jerry's "Phish Food" from my first tasting spoon. Some things you just know.

Cammy Cam is in some pretty good company now. He's not at the point of being completely hyped, either - his high ranking is based on actual admiration of his skills by legitimate sources around the league. Hopefully he'll crack the top five after this year.

That is definitely fair. Ten, count it, ten Superbowl rings are shared between those top six quarterbacks. Cam will have to lead our team to a Lombardi to be crowned elite. For now, he's as damn good as it gets - a rookie at that.

He needs a ring before he moves up any further

what? why? if he progresses to the point where he's performing above anyone currently above him on the list it makes sense to shift him ahead in the rankings. adrian peterson is arguably the best back in the league; would you arbitrarily hold him at number seven until he wins a superbowl?

I personally don't hold any grudges against a Superbowl ring or not. The media heads do; however, and unless he can get us one they won't crown him in their class.

those quarterbacks are on that list because of their eliteness, not because they won superbowls. they have rings BECAUSE they are elite.

there's a difference.

So if Cam is elite at their level he will get a ring too :)
