Michael Floyd On Sports Science

Sports Science rocks!

Floyd is impressive & IMO is a better prospect than Blackmon, but he does have the character 'concerns'. Not huge, but still not sure it is worth the risk. Here's a interesting read on 1st round WRs:

The 40 first-round picks since 2001 have combined to play 199 seasons in the NFL. Only 41 of those 199 seasons (20.6 percent) saw the receiver eclipse 1,000 receiving yards. Only 17 of the 40 receivers have registered a 1,000-yard season and just nine have done it more than once."

Personally, I would still go with Cox to make our DBs & LBs better, then take a WR later rounds & see if we hit on a great player.

with the amount of passes clausen threw to the sidelines you'd think being able to catch the ball in the midst of a bunch of cheerleaders would be a useful skill.

kind of a silly drill to have him run, imo.

i think he'd be ok, but there isn't much in that video that impressed me. maybe his reach but avoiding the cheerleaders...meh.

looks like they are scraping the bottom of the barrel for ideas.

Blackmon was considered the best receiver in the draft all throughout the season and up until this week....and all of a sudden this guy goes from the second/third best receiver to first based on a pro day?

You're all on crack.

Off field issues weighed him down. He has been checked out and the buzz is that stuff is behind him. He is bigger, faster, ar nd a better blocker than Blackmon--he would be a better fit with Carolina, if you ask me.

He's a inch taller and about a sec faster but weighs about 15 pounds more. Idc about blocking. Blackmon is more of a playmaker than Floyd. You thought Smith plays with an attitude and fierceness. Watch Blackmon sports science. Doing 360's with no gloves

Floyd has always been the better prospect then blackmon.

Blackmon just does not warrant a top 10 pick and isn't a "can't miss" wideout pick. He just doesn't hold up in athleticism compared to guys like moss, calvin, fitz, julio jones... hell even dez bryant. The fact of the matter is that blackmon doesn't stand out in any particular manner. He's just under 6 foot 1 (not bad, but nothing special), he's fast but doesn't have elite speed, he's fairly strong but isn't particularly known for his blocking and he comes from a spread offense.

He warrants a first round pick but he remind me more of a jeremy maclin, mike crabtree or greg jennings type of player. No doubt he could produce in the NFL and have a very good career (especially with a good QB) but I don't see him as the next andre/calvin/moss.

Floyd has an extreme resemblance to julio jones. He's just as fast as blackmon, played in a pro style offense, a little taller and seems a bit more suited for circus catches and jump ball scenarios. I do think blackmon is a safer pick but floyd has a very high ceiling along with a skillset that can dominate NFL games. If it weren't for blackmon's incredible stats and his team's high rankings (mostly a product of a VERY effective spread scheme) I really think he'd be projected as a mid 1st rounder.

We have an odd predicament at wideout here in Carolina. Smith and Lafell are pretty much a lock to be a very strong 1-2 punch at wideout. Gettis could be a dynamic deep threat, eating up safety coverage and punishing defenses for sending an extra blitzer, and he fits in perfectly for our starting trio of wideouts (possession - lafell, slot - smith, deep - gettis). If we draft a wideout, we end up burying what could be crucial and cheap talent in Lafell, Gettis and even Pilares (he showed potential). However, if we don't draft a wideout we will probably still be OK due to smith being so damn good, but are then one injury away from having an OK receiving corps to having a pretty horrid corps.

Personally I think we skip wideout this year.

1. There will be better prospects for the 1st and 2nd rounds in future drafts.

2. Great QBs make very average WRs look elite, or at least abuse particular strengths a WR has (see peyton manning, tom brady, drew brees, rodgers). Not a bad time to test Cam's ability to do this.

3. After cam has another season or 2, he should know exactly what he wants from his wideouts. At this point we let him evaluate receivers to draft so they have a much higher success rate on our team. (Think about how Peyton Manning worked with pierre garcon and austin collie)

4. Alot of good Olinemen available this draft. If we go offense in the first nabbing a young stud lineman will provide more help than another weapon would. Sure we only have one bonafide receiver, but Cam is surrounded with weapons at skill positions. This allows our running game to be even more electric, gives cam more time in the pocket and of course will make it all easier when cam has to take off running.

I definitely wouldn't be against drafting Floyd. He could be a #1 WR for Newton's entire career.

Defense is a REALLY pressing need though. Thats why I'm on the Cox/Kuechly wagon,

Please Draft Floyd.

Smith is 33 on the last year of his contract and has injury history.

I love Smith but anything can happen. If he goes down or doesn't produce well we have no idea what we have at our WR corps.
