Coming Down To Coples Or Kuechly

Oh i'm sorry a whole 3 1/2 sacks.Davis was reguarded as a athlete and coming out many assumed he might move to LB anyway. Kuechly has been noted to not play as fast on the field as his 40 states. Why do we need to take a kid who is not a athlete and try to make him replace one of the better athletes on the team?

Luke Kuechly

Strengths:

  • Instincts that are truly rare
  • Nose for the ball
  • Extremely intelligent
  • Rock-solid tackler
  • Takes good angles
  • Very advanced ability to shed blocks
  • Strong hands
  • Produces good down-and-distance situations
  • Gets deep in his pass drops
  • Reads quarterback's eyes well
  • Surprises with ability to run downfield with pass receivers
  • Student of the game
  • Proven leader by example; passion for the game
  • Durable, experienced starter
  • Consistent, reliable producer

    Weaknesses:
  • Lacks great speed
  • Not a super athlete
  • Closing speed is not special
  • Not an experienced blitzer
  • Could use another 10-12 pounds of bulk

That analysis was done before the combine when folks thought that was true. The fact that his measurables was in the top 3 on almost every drill measuring speed, athleticism, and strength put all that to bed. Anyone keeping up with things knows that holds no water. Go look at his combine results and Patrick Willis's and compare them and then get back to me. Anyone who still thinks he is not a great athlete with great measurables and production doesn't have a clue. Just like he put on 8-9 lbs before the combine and still kept his speed. So again how about getting up to speed so you can keep up. What people thought was that he wasn't that fast, but now they realize he is faster than he looks. But his production on the field surpasses everyone. Probably the bias about being white. Sad but true.

How many sacks did Willis have in his college career??? 6 total. Through his junior year he had 3 which puts Kuechly ahead since Willis didn't even smell the field his freshmen year. Amazing what you learn when you actually do some research instead of cut and paste the first scouting report you come across.

If Hurney passes on a 6'6'' 290lb DE for Keuchly then he's a moron. Who would you rather have...Brian Cushing or JPP?? Probably not going to go wrong with either but JPP disrupts the offense way more than any linebacker would. You always go DE talent over LB talent. If Hurney passes then Coples better just be a complete lemon by the scout team's evaluation. He's basically the only complete 4-3 defensive end in the draft.

Yeah who would you rather have? A Patrick Willis/Dan Morgan type linebacker or a larger version of potentially the next Vernon Ghoulston..

Then you would be wrong. They are looking at 9, 12, 14 16, and 22. We don't agree on this but there are highly rated DT's in this draft.

I agree they are looking at drafting from various spots in the first.

I disagree that there are highly rated DTs in this draft. A deep class of DTs...no one looks great and the difference between 1 and 5 isn't much

You keep saying this but he has invited all the top DT in for a visit. Maybe you need to forget the Idea that we won't take a DT.

Most of the DTs we seem to be looking at are guys who can play either DT or DE. I think if he goes that direction he wants a guy who is versatile and most importantly is explosive enough to be effective in a 1 gap attacking style. If they can do that, I don't think he cares if you want to call him a DT or DE.

Before we go back and forth for 100 posts about who we brought in and that gives us some idea of who we will draft why not look at who we drafted over the years and whether we ever brought them in. Maybe someone with a better memory can help me but before Cam I don't remember bringing in the guys we actually picked. Did we bring in Clausen which was our highest pick in 2010? Did we bring in Brown since we didn't have a first?? I don't remember bringing in Stewart. I do think we brought in Otah. But I am almost positive we didn't bring in Beason or Williams.

Am I close or out in left field???

With a 1 round pick spend the expectations are definitely that the player will be a starter and a contributor on the team the upcoming season. I don't see that with Couples since we already have 2 great DE's in CJ and Hardy. Sure he could rotate in but the value just isn't there to justify the #9 pick. Also with the 1 round pick you want to hit the nail on the head which Hurney normally does in the first round. And I my opinion there isn't a safer pick than Luke Kuechly (Since Kalil will be off the board) in the remainder of the draft.

I understand that people look at the Giants and their D-line and think we need to improve ours. That is right our interior part of the line was not up to par last season and the result was that our LB's got exposed and our passrush got neutralized. However DT's (Which we had 2 rookies at the position last year + a veteran on IR) need time to develop normally 2-3 years before they start to blossom.

So in my opinion or real softspots are our LB core since we cannot stay health at the position and need depth since Senn isnt the answer and in our secondary at Saftey / CB. However there are no CBs nor S that has justified value at the #9 pick. Thus if we cannot trade down our choice should be Kuechly.

Dont think id call our DE's great, esp Hardy.

All I know is I want a DT that can get pressure on the QB and be adequate in run D.

Along with a number 2 CB in this draft.
