Coming Down To Coples Or Kuechly

Just look at the draft rankings..

3 QB's, 2-3 WR's, 3 OT's, 1 G, 1 RB and all are top 20-25 rated guys in the draft. That's 10-11 of the top 20-25 players in the draft that are on offense. (Not my rankings, just expert and draft rankings) WR and Oline have a lot of 2nd-3rd round talent as well. This draft is top heavy offensively with 4 of the top 5 prospects being offensive players (2 QB, 1 RB, 1 WR) and (3 QB, 2 OT, 1 G, 1 RB, 1 WR) rate generally in the top 10-12. That's 4 of the top 5 players or 8 of the top 10/12 players.

The only standout defensive prospect's in this draft that are highly rated are Claiborne, Coples, Cox and Ingram. (Coples is generally rated in the 10-12th area and the other three are varied. The only certain top 10 Defensive prospect is Claiborne. Cox varies from 7/8th - 15th in rankings, Ingram varies from 8th-14ish in rankings.

You got Trent, you got about 3-4 WR. I know they'll make a quicker and bigger impact on O than anybody else on D except Morris

I wouldn't expect Claiborne to make much of an impact as a coverage guy on anyone's defense this year.

I wouldnt mind any of the people being rumored at our spot, but not only do I want Coples, but I think the Panthers do as well. Give us 2 good DEs to build the DL around. Dont think they want to draft DT in the first round after drafting 2 last season and Edwards coming off an injury.

Coples makes the most sense.

How many times in the past have we drafted guys we didn't bring in for interviews?? Several. We have talked with him twice now though (combine and pro day). My guess is we realize there is no way he falls to us in the second so we aren't spending much time with him face to face.

Also sometimes you bring guys in when you aren't completely sure about them. Just because you are invited to an interview doesn't mean a team is sold on you, and conversely, even if a team doesn't bring you in for an interview doesn't mean there isn't interest.

I don't believe Clausen was ever invited to Charlotte two years ago.

Under Fox we did it a lot. I don't know if we do the same under Rivera. Maybe I am making this up but haven't we had more people coming in than in years past? I don't know if that is coincidence, I made it up, or is a change in philosophy. Fox seemed more paranoid than Rivera does.

But yeah outside of the first and possibly the second round, we wouldn't bring in guys anyway. Given you don't know who may drop and who will be taken where, you likely can't bring in everybody. And no we didn't bring in Clausen. I am sure if Hill falls as precipitously as Clausen did, we would give him a hard look in the third round. But I really think it depends on whether we sign Smith long-term or not this year.

Unless we make a trade, we don't have a 3rd round pick.

True but like I said we would have to give him a hard look and decide if he worth moving up to take. I can't believe Hurney won't make at least one type of move in the draft. As much as he tends to be a gambler, if he sees someone he really likes drop down into the third, I have no doubt he would arrange a trade.

I'm afraid you are probably correct. But I will say I have more confidence in this war room than those in years past. I get the impression Fox was a micromanager and Rivera is anything but...except for maybe a tad on the defense, which I have no problem with. I would just prefer the Patriots draft scheme...stockpile picks and then be stingy with them.

Once you start that process it becomes easily to keep it going. If you have stockpiled 3 second rounders you can give one up for a future pick. With us though, we rarely even seem to have our normal number.

Stephen Hill likely won't even fall to the second round let alone the third. If he is still there when we pick in the second I promise you he will be given serious consideration (assuming we go Kuechly or Coples at #9 as oppose to Floyd).

I don't think he would make it past the Patriots at 30th
