It Is Going To Be Fletcher Cox.......

Every player does not fit every system, I know that. These analysts big boards don't take that into account, they simply rank the players individually as football players, not subject to scheme. The Carolina Panthers won't even have certain players on their board, I understand that. So each team's board will correlate to their needs and scheme. We both know these things, but that's not my point.

My point is, there is no 'right answer' to a big board. Mayock's guess is just a credible as any GM in the NFL.. you seem to discredit these so-called draftniks, where you really shouldn't be. These are very credible, experts in their field, who have done this job before. Just as well as the average GM in the league now.

I don't discredit them all, I am pointing out just what you said. A GMs board is based on what he thinks the team needs based on scheme, and their own ratings. So what Mayock says about Cox being the number 1 DT on the board is irrelevant to what we do. Using Mayock's selection to justify why we should pick him without discussing why he is the best fit for our scheme and defensive needs is therefore also irrelevant. you said so yourself just not in the exact same words. I was just pointing out hat Mayock's assessment may not only be incorrect but even if Cox is the best DT in general, he may not be the best one in our scheme or fit what we are trying to upgrade. So using his analysis as proof we should draft him is insufficient.

His first step is considered elite. His 10 yard split was 1.63, the best of any DT in the draft. For comparison, Luke Kuechly ran a 1.63 10-yd split as well. And Kuechly weighs 246lbs, compared to Cox's 298lbs. Fletcher Cox is considered Elite quickness/burst/first step.

He graded out very good against the run, and has room to bulk up another 10lbs without losing quickness.

I made this point before, but you cannot just look at combine results and assume that it's all the same on tape. Watch the tape again, his first step is good, but not quite as good as Worthy's or Still's.

Cox is a 3-tech/5-tech DT.. there is no questioning that. So he fits our scheme, and he is the top rated DT on many people's boards. I believe Cox is the top DT on our board.. is he the best player on our board? That is a different debate.

It doesn't matter what the talking heads think about a player. And because a guy moves up on Mayock's board or Kiper's board has nothing to do with how the team's scouts and GMs see him. How many people rated Newton the best QB in the draft?? Did Hurney and Rivera care?? Do you think what they say about Cox matters either?? NFL teams do a lot more work than any draftnik does finding out about the players they are interested in. There jobs depend on it. Guys like Kiper will be here next year whether they are right or wrong on all their picks this year. GMs may not have the same luxury.

If the Panthers pick Cox it won't have anything to do with the facts the draftniks like him or not.

I think 1 thing about this post of yours panthers55, is that some of us (I know I was) were pimping Cox due to his performance during last season (& then going back & reviewing all of the game vids I could get my hands on), then comparing that to other DTs (high ranked & others). This was when the expert 'draftniks' had him out of their top 5. I know the reason I think the Panthers could go with him is d/t his performance & his ability to disrupt in the backfield. NOT b/c some draftniks say he is now "worthy" of being picked top 10.

Oh, additionally, we think we know what our team needs & if a player will be able to fill a high priority need for our team. I know I'm not an expert, but I am an avid Panthers fan & football fan. Not everybody just pulls info from mock draft boards, etc.

I've watched as much tape as I can get of all the top DT. None of the other guys are as disruptive, versatile and have a non stop motor as Fletcher. Still is pretty good as well but Cox did it against top competition. Not to mention all the double teams he had to deal with. He knows how to get skinny in the hole and can draw so many holding calls.

Another thing about Cox is when he lined up at the 5 tech or outside in the 3-4 you couldn't just block him with a TE. He destroyed TE's and RB's. Plus all the screen plays he sniffed out and his change of direction ability. Which is why he does so well in the 3 cone drill. Then don't get me started on his get off and the fact you rarely in any film see him get push back even when being double teamed. Crazy thing about him is he hasn't reach his full potenial body wise or skill set. He's mostly only useing the bull rus. Just wait till he is taught how to use the spin and the up and under rip. Dude is not even hand fighting yet which will make his get off even faster.

I'm just thinking with Rivera's defensive mind all the line combination he could do with Fletcher, CJ, and Hardy. You have 2 guy that can line up any where and disrupt.

Pie for doing your own research.

I agree with you that Cox is the top DT. And, he is one of the guys that I would not mind.

People need to not go off the deep end on this pick. It realistically could be DT, DE, CB......even WR or OL.

Just enjoy it.
