Panthers Targeting Receiver In 1St Round?

This Hypothetical can happen. It's happened before. When Smith went down. We didn't have anyone. Besides, who's to say that Floyd won't indeed take the #1 spot away from Smith? There's a possibility of that happening. You can't put all your eggs in the Smith basket forever. I agree there are other needs, but if Floyd is there and all the other players that were worth a 9 are gone, what then? We don't know the Panthers Board yet. For all we know, this is the pick they are wanting to make. It's all speculation.

Oh, I agree it can happen. And like I said I wouldn't be upset with a WR in the 1st, as long as it's a good value (Blackmon at 9, Floyd after at least a small trade down), I just don't like the "without Smitty we got nothing" argument because we DO have Smitty. If every other position is adequately manned, then you can start planning for emergencies. The thing is, we don't have to say "IF our CB2 goes down, we got nothing!" because we actually don't have anything at CB2. The same could be argued for DT and (while I do still like Hardy plenty) DE opposite of CJ.

Take Steve Smith away, Where's the talent? Not trying to be an a-hole. But if smitty is gone, What do we have? LaFell is a decent #2-3. Gettis is the same with the potential to be a #1, but the jury is out on him too. Pilares, Edwards, Adams, Arijotutu, who else? If smith is gone, Olsen would be our #1 Target, it would be like the old Wesly Walls era.

I'm slowly but surely accepting the notion of picking a WR in the first.

For this season we have enough talent at the receiving position. LaFell and Gettis would be a decent #1 and #2 on some other team. I think Pilares can have a good season. Adams I think can be good. The other people I don't think will be on the team. I think it would be ludicrous to take a WR with the #9 pick pick this year when there are positions we desperately need to address a lot worse that will have better players available to draft at them then say Blackmon or Floyd. Like I said, if we want one we can get one in the 4th or 5th. There will be talented receivers there. Drafting a receiver in the 1st would be the absolute dumbest decision this team has ever made and I guarantee it isn't going to happen.

Apparently we came close to taking AJ Green with the 1st pick last year. If the Panthers think Floyd or whoever is that level of receiver why wouldn't they make the pick this year then? Last year this time people were guaranteeing we wouldn't take Cam. Newsflash..none of us know

My guess is that they're interviewing all the guys that have potential to be there at #9 as BPA. Smart strategy imo... I'm sure they have their favorites and the smoke screen aspect plays into it as well to entice other teams into a trade offer. In other words, who knows wtf they are gonna do.

i'd be thrilled with Floyd at #9... he'll be BPA

look at everybody else people are thinking about at this position... Coples, Poe, Kuechly, Cox, etc. with every single one of them, there's questions about whether or not they'll produce at a high level once drafted. where are those questions with Floyd (or Blackmon for that matter, although i doubt he drops)? off the field issues? who cares? they're both fantastic athletes who will transition well to the NFL and would make immediate impacts
