Panthers Apparently "love" Luke Kuechly

You have lost your mind.

You're right I must be out of my mind to continue to argue with you when you don't have a clue and you refuse to listen to reason but continue your ridiculous arguments. I will let Cotblock take up the gauntlet. He seems more than able to continue the discussion.

Coaches pick their players. GMs may have the final say, but if you think they are going to overrule their coaches, you're nuts. The only way that happens is if your name is Fox and it's your last year. I have no doubt that Hurney has input, but in the end, the draft belongs to the scouts and coaches. Whether it's like that in Cleveland with Holmgren, I don't know...but GMs who draft basically ruin their teams, unless they also happen to be the coach. GMs may take more control if coaches bomb their drafts a few years in a row, but for the most part, the coaches pick the players they want because they, not the GMs, know the players they want and need for their schemes.

I will try once again since I had a break and an ice tea and at least can throw it out for discussion for the more rational posters. Saying that coaches make draft picks is like saying GMs make draft picks, it is usually an oversimplication which may appeal to the less knowledgeable but doesn't explain the issues.

I won't say I know how every team operates but clearly control over draft personnel and free agents is a huge deal in front offices and is a source of conflict most everywhere. In fact many coaches like Shanahan and Belicheck have it written into their contracts that they get final say on player personnel selection. But this is how I think Hurney and the Panthers do it.

Hurney when he came here was a front office guy who knew little about football but he did know contracts and negotiation. Contrast that with a John Elway in Denver who came in knowing players and personnel but had little clue about the contract side of things.

Fox ran the player side of things although publically it was a collaboration up through 2010 when Hurney took over and did it his way. We see how that turned out. In 2011 with Rivera on board and JR back in the saddle it was likely more of a committee with Hurney willing to go along with Rivera as long as he feels he has the ability to nix something he can;t agree with. I think that Rivera and the coaching staff make a list of what positions they want to upgrade and priorotize what they have who they want and want to get rid of. Hurney looks at the cap and all the contracts and overlays the ramifications of signing certain folks, not signing others, and who they need to keep for salary purposes or not. The scouts for NFLplayers work on their free agent board while the college scouts make their draft board. Then they go through the free agency process and see who they pick up and who they can afford as well as who they can let go.

As for the draft I think that Hurney is obviously an important player but I think that Rivera dictates what positions they need and who they need to upgrade. The scouts rate the board and Rivera and his coaches input that as well. I doubt Hurney watches film or imputs this area as he really isn't a football guy, he never played. He knows a lot being around it for years but likely doesn't know what to watch to see how to distinguish good versus great.

On draft day they know who they want and have all the scenarios down. Hurney is the one doing the negotiation if we trade down or up to get a certain guy but I suspect they all have input with Hurney being the expert in the trade and negotiation part.

Each does what they are the experts in.

As for other teams, I don't know. I don't claim any expertise in knowing what all of the front offices are thinking or how they act.

Some very informative tweets from Greg Cosell (one of Cam's biggest fans)

More I watched Kuechly more I liked him. Plus athleticism. Great play recognition. Played with eyes better than any LB I've evaluated.

Kuechly at times ran down teh seam with TE in coverage. Better athlete on tape than I was led to believe. Terrific closing speed in run game

Think Kuechly could play 4-3 OLB or 3-4 ILB. Scheme + position versatile. Many might disagree but I feel better prospect than Hawk(5th-2006)

What surprised me w/Kuechly was athleticism + movement. Is he quick twitch, dynamically explosive? No but played fast w/urgent reaction time
