Lets Take A Look Back At The Huddles Opinion On Drafting Cam Before The Draft

I - like most everyone here - was dead set on taking Andrew Luck. Then when he announced he was returning to school I was a big A.J. Green supporter for about a week or so. I was sold on Cam when he had his media workout that got so many rave reviews. Up until then, I hadn't really considered him an option at 1st overall so I didn't really do a lot of research and as a result didn't know much about him.

From that point on I was solidly pro-Cam, even before it looked like we were interested. I always felt there was risk involved - a ton of it - but also felt we were in a position to take a big risk to get big reward, otherwise we'd end up stuck in the middle of the pack for the next 5 years or more. Good enough to not blow it all up and start from scratch, but too bad to ever be a serious contender. Sort of like most of Fox's years here.

Having said that, however, I NEVER in my wildest dreams EVER saw Cam playing as well as he did this early on. That shocked me, even now. Though I do think he'll suffer a little bit of a sophomore slump this year as most rookie QB's do, long-term I feel we're in damn good hands with Cam.

A good friend o mine was beyond annoying when this new qb showed up at auburn and couldnt stop talking about him. Even before the season started he was like..."dude, you have to watch our team this yr...this guy newton is badass". So i can say he was on my radar and after watching much of the later season games...i thought holy cow the panthers have a shot at this guy...well lets just say it was luck that he fell to us.

To Jangler,

Id say 95% of the opposition towards Newton on this board was steeped in racial bias, jim crow ideals, white privelege, etc. Fans in a non descript coded language way let us know how emphatic thry were against a black person being the QB of this team. They obviously subscribe to the belief that only white men can and should play QB in the NFL. This is why you had people deeming Billy Volek and a 2nd year Clausen as better safer options than the best QB prospect in decades. Cams skin color prevented them from recognizing the undefeated national title Heisman campaign he had just come off of. Instead focusing on his mugshot and trouble in FLA 3 years prior. The fact mods and the board tries to keep those threads supressed lets you know how guilty they feel about it. Now we're supposed to be shocked Cam did so well when there were plenty of people (like myself) who said he would. Its just a simple case of people selling a kid short telling him hed make a good janitor, when in actuality hes capable of being an exec. Then when he becomes an exec, he ends up the best and coolest CEO theyve ever had. And really thats what folks were deathly afraid of.

i don't know how much of it was outright conscious racism. you can't discount hidden prejudice - deep internal bias that an individual is often not even aware of until confronted with it.

i think cognitive dissonance hit a whole lot of people last year, and that's why you started seeing such polarizing views on cam.

luckily for the most part cam has served as a uniting factor among members of the fanbase who were once split apart by this. cam's success has very much dashed outdated prejudiced thinking, and the human beings who follow the team are better for it. the only ones left are the fringe wackos who've gone from being the establishment to rejected pariahs.

I agree PhillyB this board and fanbase is 20 times more progressive and cultured today than it was even a year ago. Cam Newton taught a lot of our fans a valuable lesson about bias and stereotyping/pre-judging. Its a lot more accepting and sensitive to black QBs now that we have one of our own that we're firmly behind.

In actuality i hope RGIII does for Washington what Cam has done for the Panthers. Its going to be great watching those two ball.

I'm looking forward to seeing what RGIII can do, how awesome would it be seeing Cam vs. RGIII conference championship games for the next decade? Also, how long will RGIII last before he goes insane after losing each one to Cam? ;)
