Lets Take A Look Back At The Huddles Opinion On Drafting Cam Before The Draft

Just thought I would let everyone know that I posted this in October of 2010 and got flamed for it, not only because no one really knew about Cam but because everyone was still high on Luck. As a football fan I take pride in my analysis and expert picking skills years before they actually happen.

Impossible! No one knew a national title/Heisman winning QB who dominated the best division in college football would be this good! No one knew Cam had a brain!

I posted this after Auburn's sixth game of the year when they beat Kentucky, which was definitely before he one the Heisman and won a National Championship.

Nice try though.

i don't mean cam is the history, i mean seeing attitudes change and hidden prejudices ousted and eradicated by the individuals who held them is history. what's happening in carolina with the quarterback position is only a microcosm of what's been going on since civil rights, and will continue to go on until prejudice is completely gone.

Exactly. Dont let people downplay what is currently happening. Its called progression. Before last year a black QB getting love and support in Carolina was far fetched. Now I can see us taking chances on more in the future. Cam is not the first in the NFL or for the Panthers. But because of his talent and UNIVERSAL appeal he's one of the most important in history. How many black QBs in NFL history were given the reigns and trust by a team straight out of college? Moon wasnt drafted and spent years in Canada, Culpepper sat a year, McNair sat a couple years, Vick & McNabb didnt start right away, etc. We are witnessing history and the evolution of NFL mentalities.

Everything has to be about Black or White. How many QB's were given the reigns right out of college? Good Lord.

Rivers sat, Brees sat, Brady sat, Roethlisberger sat, Eli sat, almost all QB's sit. It has nothing to do with black or white, it's what most FO and coaches do in the NFL.

You act like only black QB's have to sit before they are handed the reigns....almost all QB's sit.

History is having an African-American president, not an African-American quarterback.

Look at it this way: I love me some Cam, but Neil DeGrasse Tyson does far more to break racial stereotypes than our rookie QB. A black astrophysicist who's insightful, brilliant and has a hilarious sense of humor? That's a terrific role model for youths of any color: to be the smartest man in the room and yet able to make everyone laugh.

that guy is an astro-badass

cam newton's success will change the way young black football players are scouted by high school coaching staffs. black kids are converted to wide receivers because their athletic ability allows them to excel at that position; cam is proof that an incredibly athletic individual can succeed at the quarterback position, and suddenly kids that normally would've been converted to wideout or defensive back will be given shots at QB.

it may take a couple of decades to see generational shifts, but the complexion of the game is going to change.

He was better than I though he would be at being a true QB his rookie season. That really caught me off guard, I was stunned that he could actually go through his progressions and make the right throw.

Not your fault... you probably heard the incessant "Cam only operated in a single-read-and-run offense" drumbeat from Mayock, Nawrocki, McShay, Casserly, et.al.

Which was bullshit when they said it and is still bullshit to this day.

Even Ryan Kalil said he didn't want to play for Cam when we drafted him.

Kalil never said any such thing.

He *did* make a joke at Cam's expense about the "icon and entertainer" thing though... because (1) Kalil is a funny guy and (2) Cam was just a rook.

You really, seriously think Kalil publically stated he didn't want to play with Cam AFTER Cam had been drafted? Seriously?

It was not, and is not.

You guys act like Cam was a slam dunk pick. He certainly turned out to be, but I was very nervous, just like those guys you mentioned were. The problem is that if you take a QB at the no.1 and he busts....it can set you back for years. Now things have changed a bit with the new rookie scale, but that's the truth.

Cam had one year starting in D1, had some red flags in his past, and had completed 185 passes TOTAL in D1.

That is normally not the kind of resume that gets you the no.1 overall pick. Those 3 things that I just listed are what made me, and most NFL folks nervous. Not that he was black.

This is why i'm 100% behind RG3. No red flags in his past, none, nothing, not one question mark what so ever.

Hate to burst your bubble KT, but you are still proving yourself to be one of the most racist people on this board.

I've never gotten the impression that KT hates white people (or other non-African-American races).

I think the word you may be looking for is racialist.

And, oh, by the way... I think *MUCH* of the resistance toward Cam prior to last years draft (both in the media and fanbase) was racial at its heart, whether it was conscious or unconscious.

-If you've met Cam or watched enough interviews, Cam loves him some Cam.

My son did meet Cam while they were both at Auburn. Said he was the nicest, most unpretentious football player he'd ever met not named Lee Ziemba (who my son also knew).

Funny... now both are on the Panthers. :D
