the sort that gives you a different ip address- does anyone have any experience with them? Im not looking to do anything criminal or whatever - I know if the law wants to find you they can - but what about hiding who and where you are located and other sensitive information from web masters and such - can it be done?

Ive done some googling on the subject and see lots of advertisement type information- but does it work?

Proxies are the only way i know of to actually do it. Too much of a pain for me.

Paying by credit card for a company to supposedly do it for you might be even less anonymous than surfing normally.

Use firefox, use scriptblocker, clear cookies after every session. Keep your gmail closed while surfing.

Being that I am very active in this space and a part of Hush Tunnel, I wanted to add some thoughts to this discussion:

Tor and Hush Tunnel are two different, complimentary technologies that are indirectly competitive. In general, there are a wide array of technologies that have pros and cons in certain scenarios. Should you use a credit card through Tor, and if your traffic is intercepted, who is liable? Then again, if you want to do something illegal in your country, you probably shouldn't use Hush Tunnel, unless of course, your country is repressive and what you are doing is considered the norm, internationally. I would choose the former for higher anonymity and the latter for higher confidentiality.

Tor and Hush Tunnel have different preferable uses cases, with relevant practical advantages in each case (anonymity vs. confidentiality). To get the best of both worlds, they can even be used together.

See using SSH tunnel with Tor:
