Everette Brown DE FSU

Man I don't know what the hell to think about Everrete Brown and this deal.

Brown is definitely a top notch player, and honestly in not thinking about what we gave up, he is definitely a good pick up.

The only thing about him is:

He's small

FSU DEs have a bad track record

He's a jr.

I hope this kid turns out to be a beast, but was he really worth all we lost when we have Charles Johnson and decent depth at DE? Cause you don't trade all we did for just a rotational project DE!?

*sigh*

You really think we have decent depth at DE when our most successful pass rusher wants to leave?

Don't get me wrong: I think Charles Johnson will be a good starter in this league. But the jury's still out on Taylor as well as Brayton.

Well considering Peppers is still on the team, yeah I think we do have decent depth at DE, especially relative to our other needs.

The thing about Brown is if he's going to be an every down player, you don't draft a player that high, and for what we gave up if he isn't.

That's what I'm thinking. Since we gave up that much, he better be starting.

Here are my initial reactions from having watched the scouting tape as a reminder of his abilitles:

1. Jesus Christ at the amount of pass rushing moves on this kid. Yes, I realize it's a highlight reel package designed to make him look all-world, but those are NFL caliber moves. No question in my mind that he's exactly what the fans thought that Hilee Taylor would be.

2. He needs to learn to wrap up. On quite a number of those plays he was touching the quarterback with both hands and still managed to let him get away. That won't work in the NFL.

3. I like the fact that when he comes from the blindside, he's already using the strong arm on the throwing arm of the quarterback to force fumbles. I always wondered why more DEs didn't try that. Peppers made it an art form and this kid is already chopping at the QB like a seasoned veteran.

4. The quickness is incredible. Not only is his sense of when the snap is coming just amazing, his ability to beat tackles flat footed is just a tremendous asset for a defensive end.

5. Despite being undersized on paper, he doesn't play small. He has a multitude of pass rush moves that include power and speed. Getting 10 lbs. on this man won't be a problem. The size issue is a non issue as far as i'm concerned. He's a football player.

6. He has a tendency to over pursue. I think that will hurt his adjustment to the running game. He's not a three down lineman right now, but few are. I think if we somehow end up keeping Peppers that he'll go back to LDE and Charles Johnson will be the RDE on 1st and short down situations and Brown will come in on passing downs.

I will say this. Anybody that thought Stanley McClover was a star in the making based on preseason games is probably going to cream when they see this guy making 3rd team tackles look like cannon fodder. It wouldn't shock me if this kid came out gangbusters like that.

this dude is incredible. easily could have been a top 10 pick. i was out all day and didn't know anything about the draft until 11pm.

never did i think we had a chance at him i had him at #5 in my mock.

trading next years #1 for him and getting an extra #4.....not bad at all. big time worth it. he is easily a high end first round pick and a huge value for us.

worried about next year not having a 1st rounder? don't. this was better and cheaper than getting otah. contract is going to be great as well for someone of his calibur.

just so you guys know...he has a lot more moves than peppers and they are definitely moves that translate into the NFL. he is perfect for what meeks does. DEs are going to be putting pressure on the QB consistently. you don't go after this guy unless you want that to happen.

here are some of the things that have been said about him...

What he has to offer is a unique ability to go after and rush the passer very effectively. He is a great athlete and has some of the better speed at the position (at the combine Brown came in at 6’1” and weighed 256 pounds. He ran a 4.73 40) and he is quick. (link)
Florida State defensive end Everette Brown is arguably the most explosive pass rusher in this year's NFL Draft field, and he has the potential to become a defensive force in the right system early in his career. At about 245 pounds, Brown is a bit light to be an every-down player in a 4-3 system, but he has the perfect size and athletic ability to play the rush-linebacker position in a 3-4 set. (link)
notice that one said he is light but robert mathis is 10 pounds lighter and freeney is only about 10 pounds more. brown has a frame that can easily put on some more weight but the speed that the guy ahs slong with the moves....he's spectacular.

Letʼs attack any ʽworkout warriorʼ questions right now: It does not apply here. Real simple. The comparison to the Cowboys' DeMarcus Ware are inevitable.

Everette Brown is the next in line of great pass rushers. This kid is an athlete to die for and has gotten better and better every season in his college career. He can do it all and just about has. His speed, quickness and athleticism are breathtaking; by all accounts, he is the prototypical 3-4 OLB and a future superstar in the NFL.

.

ʽGame changerʼ is the best way to describe Brown; not only does he make plays, he makes them at key moments. His forced fumble during the Champʼs Sports Bowl against Wisconsin that was returned for a TD all but iced the game for Florida State and the Badger offense never looked the same after that.

Possessing elite burst and athleticism for his size, Brown is a nightmare for opposing tackles. Great flexibility, balance and change of direction skills make him ideal for a switch to OLB. In addition to his elite athletic abilities, Brown has a wide variety of pass rush moves that he has perfected, including a devastating spin move. He uses his hands very well and has good upper body strength to disengage and rock the tackle back on his heels. Once free, Brown closes with force and looks to strip the ball.

While he makes the perfect OLB, he has the lower body strength to stay with his hand on the ground as well. FSU moved him around some along the line and while he does not have much experience dropping into coverage, he has shown enough on that rare occasion to believe he can make the switch without much issue.

He will need some time to fully transition to a stand up LB role and will have to learn the intricacies of coverage but the physical tools are there for him to make the transition. He has had some consistency issues and his skills against the run did not develop as quickly as his pass rush abilities.

There is not much to dislike about Brown. He can stand up or stay at DE and physically, he is a rare breed that is still developing. As good as Brown is, he is getting better every week and should continue to improve. He is one of the few prospects that appear capable of making an immediate impact.

With Cleveland expected to continue using a 3-4 defense, and Green Bay bringing in Dom Capers to install a 3-4 and San Francisco still seemingly unsure of exactly what identity they will have on defense, Brown should not slip from the top 10. He is a rising talent that will immediately improve any pass rush. (link)

Brown is a dynamic rush end who plays with a high motor and has tremendous quickness. He has an elite first step and a few signature moves that allow him to get up field. He's incredibly strong, featuring a 480-pound bench press, and uses quickness and strength to his advantage. He uses his hands effectively, demonstrates good balance and coordination, and transitions well with the action. - Chris Steuber, Scout.com (link)
Everette Brown is a true game changer as a pass rusher. His ability to apply pressure off the edge is second to none in this draft. He is a physical specimen with tremendous athleticism and speed. Brown explodes off the snap and aggressively gets up the field towards the quarterback. He uses his natural athleticism and agility to routinely beat tackles. He anticipates the snap well, and quickly accelerates once locks onto his target, and has the speed to chase plays down. Brown has been extremely productive, even in a reserve role. He only started 11 games during his first two seasons in Tallahassee, but managed 25 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks. Brown’s pass rush ability will translate to an OLB position in a 3-4, or a DE in a 4-3 alignment. (link)

as a DE he will be phenomenal and has an incredible talent that will take him far and be used early and often. i don't know about starting but i do know that whenever he is on the field be ready for him to make an impact.

he is a game changer. pure and simple.

Guys...forget what we gave up, if we get as far as a player like Everette Brown can get us next year, we won't be giving up much other than a pick in the 30's

i also like the pick, but we still have a very tough schedule next year

it's good that we've drafted on the defensive side of the ball. this year, i wouldn't mind if a heavy majority of picks is on that side of the ball.
