Something I Dont Understand In Regards To Drafting

@Stroupe

In the later rounds there will def be some negatives, but the point is there is still POTENTIAL and HOPE for them to become good players.

And not just wasting late round picks on guys with little to no chance of becoming good players.

@CSX

Capt is not big lol and Lawrence Wilson is not fast.

Fast in football terms is 4.5 and lower

I don't know what your expecting out of a late round pick. The players who have the measurables, production and intangibles(IQ, work ethic etc.) are drafted early. Later in the draft you are looking at players that are adequate in 1 or 2 of the above catagories at best. Players like Munnerlyn who are disadvantaged but still can find a way to contribute are vital pieces to teams, where not every player can be all world.

Right, but I think sometimes Front Offices aren't trying to hit home runs in those rounds. They sometimes just want guys that could stick as special teams, backups, and contributors. The big upside guys with character/motivation/intelligence/technique issues may not be able to contribute at all and give you nothing.

Like I said, Munnerlyn has produced a lot for this team in multiple roles despite being undersized and he is still probably a better starter than Darius Butler, who was bigger and more highly drafted.

Gems are found in later rounds.

Why wouldnt those guys be able to contribute on ST's just as much as their counterparts given better measurables and comparable numbers / production in college?

I know gems are found in later rounds, but not every late pick should be spent on trying to find a starter because you won't get one a majority of the time.

It probably has something to do with the fact that a lot of high profile starters don't spend time doing "dirty work" on special teams in college and probably view it negatively. But Munnerlyn is one of our most experienced and versatile special teamers and I'm sure that's what they wanted from that pick. It's a bonus that he could play nickel and start, with mixed results, so many games for us.

Im not at all mad about the munnerlyn pick. That late, any production is great, and yes the small/slow etc types that are just football players often make great special teams players. Tim Shaw is another example (though one who was still picked too early). That said I do think at times our FO has often overlooked these physical traits, instead over-favoring college production. The reality is, Munnerlyn really should only be playing special teams and backup DB. When referencing traits, I am also specifically not talking about combine numbers- remember a big knock on Beason coming out was that he was slow based on a poor combine 40 time. Obviously Beason is not slow when the game starts.

I do agree that we need to focus more on going after bigger, stronger, faster players. For some reason I am confident that RIvera will mandate this. Just look at who got cut or received limited to no playing time last year - brown and norwood for example vs the players Rivera brought in or got playing time mid-year: huge DTs and bigger DEs. Rivera also repeatedly complained about our LB group not including enough 3 down players, ie none (besides anderson) had the right combo of size for the run and athleticism to drop vs the pass. You can bet for sure we wont be drafting any more two down run stoppers at LB.

Vernon Gholston was a physical freak, and also had great production in college. He was a clean player off the field and interviewed well. Sounds like the player you are describing.

Some people are busts and just never pan out for what ever reason.

Id rather draft a complete total package player on the small % chance they bust than draft a scrub with very little chance of becoming a good player.

Come on guys, he just wants us to draft complete players in every round. You know, the guys that have top end physical attributes, production in college and no personality red flags.

You know what, he actually has cracked it, owners across the league will be getting in touch buddy!

Eh, I kind of understand his point with upside and getting guys who can physically play the position. I just think those overachieving, special team, and glue guys are important to nail down in the draft too. You shouldn't always roll the dice on guys because they could conceivably become a starter.

Id rather get those overachieving special team guys in free agency.

A good eye for talent and potential can find absolute steals in the 3-7 rounds.
