Something I Dont Understand In Regards To Drafting

Im pretty big on measurables. As in I for the most part only want to draft players with the size and speed to be successful at their position. You can teach technique but you cant teach height / speed / weight.

I see no point in drafting a short CB, I see no point in drafting a slow LB, I see no point in drafting an undersized DL or OL.

I will never understand the FO drafting Lawerence Wilson OVER Quan Sturdivant last year. Quan was bigger, faster (4..5ish speed) and if im not mistaken had just has good if not better numbers from college.

Head Scratchier...

A player can have all the meaurables but can be dumb as rocks.

True hence why their college career / numbers should be taken into consideration also along with interviews.

Still dont give the FO an excuse to waste draft picks on midget CB's or slow LB's or undersized DE's.

Evaluating talent and trying to project a players success in the NFL (NFL is a very different game than college) is as much an art as a science.

By just focusing on measurables, you are trying to turn it into nothing but a science.

Al Davis used this philosphy and has had major BUSTS all over his resume.

Anyone that drafts off measurables alone is foolish.

The point is drafting players ALREADY at a disadvantage is stupid in my opinion when they dont even have the physical tools to be successful at their position. (generally speaking)

Perfect example of this is last year. Lawerence Wilson over Quan Sturdivant.

If size and speed meant everything the Raiders would be the best team for the last 15 years but they obviously aren't.

Football is a lot more than just physical traits. Its also mental & how hard you are willing to work and also having an affinity for the game.

Lastly running fast at the combine/pro day doesn't automatically mean you have football speed i.e in pads. That's why game tape is more important than the combine.

We drafted an undersized receiver in Smitty and that worked out pretty well. In fact we have a lot of good undersized guys in our teams history.

Also, who the hell cares about Quan Sturdivant? He didn't register a stat last year.
