So We Lose The Lottery And Draft Second...

Captain Morgan

Just curious, does anyone think the entire lottery system is a joke and should be scrapped? They are the only sport that I know of that does it, and all it does is ends up screwing over the worst teams in the league, the teams that need the talent. Look at the Bulls in '08, they were only a couple of games out of the playoffs, win the lottery and boom, get a future MVP. All the while most of the teams that were worse than they were that year, are still bad. Its a joke to think that far and away the worst team in the league(like us this year, or the heat in '08), could end up with the 4th pick in the draft. All the while teams that barely miss the playoffs have the possibility of getting the #1 pick.

Only reason is to prevent a "tank off" at the end of the season. The other sports don't really hinge on getting one star player but the NBA does.

If they wanna keep teams from tanking, then make the lottery for the worst 4 teams, don't give a team that is 1 or 2 wins from the playoffs a chance to get the top pick. 25% chance for the top pick is garbage, that means 1 in every 4 years the actual worst team in the NBA gets the #1 pick, aka the best player in the draft.

Edit: This has nothing to do with the Bobcats being especially bad this year, I have always said the lottery system was a joke.

No offense guys, but in a league like the NBA where there are maybe 4-5 game changing players that come out every year and barely any of them come from late in the draft, its pretty silly to just give the number 1 pick to the worst team. It completely encourages teams to tank for a season or 2 in order to land a star player. The lottery doesn't really fix the problem (since we clearly used that tactic this year), but if it weren't in place could you imagine what teams would do if a guy like Lebron was coming out?

Honestly I would prefer the lottery to go even further- give every team that didnt make the playoffs an equal chance at the top pick. I think its bullcrap that a team like the Bobcats, who finished just outside of the playoffs for a few years straight and actually tried to put together a decent team, haven't had a top 8 pick in 7 years. And now that we gutted the team the NBA rewards us with a top 4 pick

Your on point. The big market teams rely on free agency knowing a ton of money can be made by stars from companies. Small market teams can only hope to land that once in a blue moon star who'll actually stay with that team. Only thing I can see changing things is to contract teams since there just aren't enough stars or make college players stay 3 or 4yrs to develop a game which would give teams a better idea of who is actually good.

just because you have the #1 pick doesnt mean you always get the best player.

Since 1980 there have been what, 31 people picked 1st overall. Of those, only 9 of them have never gone to an allstar game, and that is including John Wall and Kyrie Irving, 2 people who most would agree would probably end up an all star at some point(Kyrie at least). While technically you are correct, the odds of getting a good player out of the #1 pick is much higher than any other.

It would suck but there will be some good players there. If MKG can develope a consistant jump shot he could be real good. Its not like he is a horrible shooter. He hits some outside shot every now and again I love Thomas Robinson.....dude is just a beast and will be a good player in the NBA. Even if he does measure at 6'7-6'8. Bradly Beal looks like he is ready to score in the NBA right now.

Anthony Davis is who we want but there are guys in the top that would do us some good. Also Cho is going to get us another pick come draft night.

I'd rather have MKG over most of the other prospects not named Davis, he's got that killer instinct that this team needs and he's Kentucky's leader. He's the reason that team is staying together and plays well as a team.

MKG would be good if we went out and got a free agent center. This team cannot continue to lose like they are. If they get #2 I wouldn't be mad at the MKG pick but they'd better go after a center, at least someone like Hibbert.

They have to solve the center problem it's the biggest hole in this team since Paul Silas has come out a said Biz and Mullens are power forwards.

    • Fans are fed up with this organization's endless string of failures. And, while Morgan's less than a year into his current position, everything he's done is barreling down the same path shat out by his predecessor. If we're just pointing out this alarming lack of discrepancy between the performances of two GMs, it's really not hating. He's just proving to not be a good hire. And, hey, it's alright, because whoever Tepper hires next will, at best, only suck a little bit less. I don't mind people who are optimistic and hope Morgan turns out to be better than he's been thus far. That'd be great. None of us are rooting for him to fail. However, the embarrassing pattern of decisions persists. And it's not a good look.
    • You have to view everything that was done in 2024 through the ‘eliminate excuses for Bryce Young’ lens IMO. It only makes sense that way.     If you allow for that, you will see that Diontae fulfilled his purpose.
    • The Panthers' beat writer called the Johnson trade return "a warm bottle of RC Cola." If you're quick to discount every bit of news that disagrees with your view, maybe your view is the problem. Morgan deals himself a bad hand and he deserves every bit of criticism for it. Fitterer was the worst GM ever, but Morgan is a very similar brand of awful. Certainly when it comes to trades since 2021, Morgan's body of work makes him at best, only one of the worst negotiators in the history of North American professional sports. That's simply pointing out the numerous shortcomings he's put on display. If I point at a guy who shot someone and say "he murdered a guy," I'm not hating on him -- I'm pointing out what he did. If Morgan wants to not be labeled an incompetent clown who makes 31 other franchises better, simply stop being an incompetent clown who makes 31 other franchises better. Or, wait until Tepper makes him the fall guy after Evero.
