Jonathan Stewart The Most Elusive Rb In The Nfl?

Cam is signed through 2014 with an option year already built in 2015. There is absolutely no reason to worry about extending him before 2014 at the earliest. We only have to worry about 2013 and as I just showed a few posts ago, the increase next year to keep Stewart will likely be around 2 million dollars. Not the king's ransom some of you suggest or that much more than we are spendiing this year. With the cap space likely to go up by 20-30 million in 2014, there is not a huge crisis here.

How many good players does Carolina allow to reach the last year of there contract that they believe are part of there long term plans? So if going by what Carolina has PROVEN they will want to address Newton before 2014.

I think we talked to both last year when we made the contract to Williams. From what has been rumored, Stewart didn't want to negotiate. Why would we have let Williams go when Stewart wasn't even willing to discuss contract terms? I still think we can keep both of them.

I did not realize that. You are correct if that was the case

Mario Williams, Nnamdi....

And if Carolina pays Stewart a comparable deal that is dumb....regardless of how try structure it. You don't pay role players for limited production that kind of money...you go out an pay someone at a more valuable position to play 90% of the snaps

I was talking about guys who left here and got more, not guys in the league. I must have not been clear.

I don't think paying 6 or 7 million for a playmaker who accounts for 1200 yards of offense is too much. Smitty accounted for 1300 yards and got over 8 million while Shockey got paid 4 million for 450 yards of offense.

It isn't how many snaps you are in the game but what you do when you get your snaps. A guy like Devin Hester touches the ball only a few times a game but he is explosive enough to justify a big salary.

A lot actually. Gross, Kalil, Davis, Williams, Gamble, Steve Smith (so far) off the top of my head. Newton is signed through 2014 and has an option year built in for 2015, so why would we do anything before 2014? Any contract we make would be an extension and kick in once the current contract ends so this whole locking him up makes no sense. He isn't going anywhere.

I am quite sure you aren't allowed to address rookie contracts the first 3 years (under the new agreement). So 2014 is the first year we are allowed to.

Someone with knowledge please confirm. (Or reject :D)

Difference. Big one actually. There are not guys sitting on the bench that could step into Smittys shoes and put up comparable production. Now that guy on the bench may not give identical production but it is in the ballpark. That is why RBs are considered a dime a dozen...easy to get production from that spot.

What is Stus trade value?

Well first you have to consider what is in the bargain:

* Great RB with a low salary and a 1 year contract

* Possibility to extend 1 year with a tag at (I believe) around $7M

* History of low practice rate due to foot problems (no games missed)

This does not smell close to 1st round or even 2nd to me. The only change we get that is if we can work out kind of a long term "sign-n-trade" deal. But this is vary rare in football. Otherwise the contract is just to short to be great trade value.

This is somewhat like all "WHY DID WE NOT GET ANYTHING FOR PEPPERS, HE IS A GREAT DE" whining. Because we did not have a great DE to trade. We had the service/rental of a great DE for one year at $20M+ to trade and no one wanted that.

The rule is that you can't renegotiate for one year after the initial contract.

Not on the bench but if we wanted to pay that almost 9 million a year to another player we could have brought in Mike Williams or a number of other very productive guys. But actually I don't think there is anyone on the bench who can come in and replace Stewart either. HIs production would come from shared carries by everyone else. And if runningbacks are a dime a dozen why are there several making more than Williams is this year and why is Richardson a top 5 pick.

Actually what is real common is for the team that wants to trade for him to work out contract terms before they agree to a trade, similar to what we did with Greg Olsen last year. If we don't get a first for him we can always give him the non-exclusive tag next year. We only have to pay him around 6.5 million if he stays or if he goes elsewhere if someone else wants to pay him more, we get their first rounder.

No problem.....
